Al Sanft Obituary

Al Sanft

Born in Seattle, Washington to Louie and Ada Sanft on May 12, 1932. Al passed away on October 7, 2012 in Seattle, after a four year battle with Amyloid Heart disease. Al was a loving man who cared deeply for his family and his friends.

Al attended Garfield High school graduating in 1950. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Navy in Korea and Japan as an officer on the USS Dixie.

Al worked in his family business, Seattle Barrel and Cooperage, a company that his father founded in 1916. For 60 years he had made it into a thriving business, expanding its operations from Washington and Oregon, to Alaska and all over the Northwestern US, and Canada. As well, Al had a successful real estate company, A & B Properties, developing properties around the region. His children continue managing these businesses.

Al married the love of his life, Ruth Marie Buske, on August 14, 1959. They were inseparable. Al and Ruth raised four loving children; and later had five grandchildren who adored them. Al and Ruth built an extraordinary life together. They enjoyed traveling with friends all over the world, fishing in Westport, and going to Hawaii with their entire family every year. He went on an annual trip to Las Vegas for his Birthday with friends every May. Al and Ruth were lucky enough to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary in August 2009.

Al's favorite pastime was to go

fishing whenever he could, especially in Westport, Wash-ington, (the Salmon Capitol

of the world). He fished often mainly with his brother, and his

children, and endless amounts of friends that would dare to ride the rough waters.

In 1982, Al and Ruth built their dream home in Westport, right on the beach. He loved fishing on his private boat, "Barrels", and owned a charter fishing boat named "Firecracker", that was well known in Westport. Al and Ruth hosted a family reunion every July 4th, with fireworks and fun on the beach that everyone looked forward to.

Al's other hobbies included making kosher dill pickles. He and Ruth were famous for their smoked salmon. Al loved all sports including the Huskies, the Cougars, Seahawks, Sonics, and the Mariners. He attended games right til the end, including the famous Seahawks Monday night football game against the Packers.

Al had a giant heart. He was tall, dark, and handsome; had a twinkle in his eyes; and was tan at most times. Most people called him, "Big Al". He loved Elvis, dancing, his Cadillacs, and especially he loved spending time with all his special friends and relatives.

Al was a proud member of the Masonic temple, a 32 degree Mason, a member of the Nile Shrine temple, and member of the Elks, all for 50 years. He

was a longtime member of the Seattle Chamber of commerce and the Reusable Industrial Packaging Association, RIPA.

Al's family founded the Machzikay Hadath synagogue in Seattle, and was a founding member of Herzl Ner Tamid.

Al's family meant everything. Family was always first and foremost. Al's death was preceded by the passing of Ruth

in January 2010. He leaves behind four children. Nettie (Mark) Cohodas, Barrie (Richard) Galanti, Brina Sanft, and Louie Sanft. He also leaves behind

five grandchildren, Samantha and Ben Cohodas, and Sam, Oliver, and Rachel Galanti.

His funeral service will take place on Wednesday, October 10, 2012

at 11:30 a.m. at Herzl Ner Tamid

Synagogue, 3700 East Mercer Way, Mercer Island, Washington. Burial immediately following

services at Bikur Cholim cemetery near Evergreen Washelli, 1340 N 115th Street, Seattle, Wa.

Donations in his name can be made to the Jewish Family Service, Shriners Childrens Hospital, or Herzl Ner Tamid.

Al was a very special person to my entire family and it will take time for all to adjust to life without him. Al was the most honest, loving person I have had the pleasure to know. Thanks Al for letting us be a part of your life. You will be missed by all. I know you are gone, but I will never forget you or Ruth.

Al gave me my first job back in 1972 working at his barrel company. He and my father (also Al) were the best of friends and I also came to adore him as much. We will truly miss him. My condolences to the family. Dan Silva

I met and attended Garfield High School with Al. I moved away from Seattle in 1968 and lost contact. This was renewed 2 years ago when I was fortunate enough to share a table with him and his son at the 60th reunion of the 1950 graduation class. I share the feeling of loss the community must feel

We have lost a great captain, but his legacy will live on. I can still remember Big Al navigating the Firecracker through the wide open ocean to the Big King Salmon as if it were yesterday. Our condolences--Erwin, Julia and Caroline Buske

I was sorry to learn Al passed away from Cardiac Amyloidosis. Although I didn't know him, I thought his family would like to know we now have a Pacific Northwest Amyloidosis Support Group, with meetings held in Portland, OR & Seattle, WA. I am the contact if anyone is interested at 509-448-8981, Kay. I am a ten year survivor of C.A. yet we have too many that don't make it. May his memory help others.

My first time deep-sea salmon fishing was on Al's commercial boat. If I remember right I caught a 30lb King Salmon. I also, went fishing on his charter boat a few times. Many good memories. You will be missed.

Dear Nettie, Barrie,Brina, Louie and family
My deepest condolences on the loss of your Dad( my friend Al).
I enjoyed going to Maui every year and hanging out with your parents by the pool. I loved listening to their stories and thought your Mom was the most elegant and beautiful person I had ever met and did she know how to shop. I was in awe of her sports knowledge. Your Dad on the other hand would sit quietly and every so often pipe in about her fussing too much over him. After your Mom passed away I was kind of scared to go to Maui. It just wasn't gonna be the same, but your Dad was very sweet to me and so after the tears my job daily was to lather on the sunscreen and keep him from getting burned. Your Mom taught me this the first day at the pool. So seeing your Dad daily and listening to him was comforting to me. I will miss that so. Al and Ruthie look after each other again and thank you for making me feel welcome always. You both were a true inspiration. I treasure my memories.

I only met Brina two months ago at a Ziggy Marley concert in Seattle but knew right away that she was from a very compassionate family, a family that loves everyone. It could only be fitting that she had wonderful parents who instilled good values in her.

Oh my gosh, what a great person Al was...oh how I wish I had the opportunity to have met him!! I know for sure that his way of life will continue to be carried on by his children. Continue to warm your hearts with his loving memories.

A man who lived his life to the fullest...Mr. Al Sanft...RIP...
