I attended the Academy for a year and didn't know Ben personally, but I do know how an event such as this would have an impact on a close knit community such as the one that is Cal Maritime. My condolences to the family and to the entire CMA community

To Ben's Family,
What a beautiful statement that because of Jesus, Ben's adventures continue in Heaven. We are so sad for you and still saying many prayers for each one of you.

To the loving family of Benjamin Daviscourt:
Dan Lintz, the chief mate of the TS Golden Bear is my husband and he called me shortly after hearing about Ben's accident. He said that he was speaking to Ben earlier, after he had visited and spent time at the orphanage in Vietnam. Dan said that Ben was very moved and felt fortunate to have the experience of that visit. Dan also said that Ben was an outstanding sailor and cadet. He had the respect and loyalty of his fellow classmates and the staff and crew of the Golden Bear. Please accept our sincerest sympathies, and feel free to contact Dan at any time.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Although I can't possibly understand what you are going though, our hearts are aching for you. I see the photo of such a fine and handsome guy. I'm sure he was full of energy and a unique thirst for knowledge, and was an artist as well. Our son who is 31 was on the Golden Bear with him and we learned what happened through visiting online. Please accept our deepest condolences.

I was at Inglemoor when I heard the announcment of Ben's passing and a request for a moment of silence. I was silent because I was speechless. First was the unbelief then the memories then the sadness then the reality that Ben is in Heaven.
I have known Ben for many years and I was so proud with what he had made of his life. I was looking forward to hearing about his continued success. I have temporarily lost a friend here on Earth but will look forward to seeing Ben in Heaven.
My prayers are with all that loved him.

My son, Patrick Spicker, is a cadet at Cal Maritime in the class of 2008. Words cannot convey the sorrow I feel for your loss. Although I didn't have the privilege of knowing Ben, it is obvious from what I've read in the past few days that he was a gifted, caring young man who made a difference in many lives. My family's thoughts and prayers are with you all. Very sincerely,

My son sent us this email from the Golden Bear:
Ben Daviscourt was not just my shipmate. He was one of my good friends. I always considered him one of the most trustworthy of my CMA friends. We used to jam out almost everyday sophomore year, we had all the same classes, and ... He was my graduating class, major, and in my division this cruise. We stood watch together, formations, and etc everyday.
It was overwhelmingly difficult for our division on the bridge departing Vietnam. His body was flown home to his house in Washington and his best friend and I will visit his grave together when we get off the ship. Its hard dealing with the loss because I have met his Dad a number of times and they were best buddies. They shared the same tattoos, same adventures. Ben was 21 years old. Pray for his family.

As a longtime friend of the family, I know that Ben shared a strong and loving relationship with God and family. Julie and Mark, I am so saddened by your loss. As a parent, I know it is so very terrible to lose a child. Through the years, Barbara shared stories with me that revealed Ben's spirit for life; always the first to climb a mountain or take on a new adventure. My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family. I pray that God, through his grace, will see you through your grief in a loving and supportive way.

Your loss is shared by myself and many other men and women that Ben met here in the Bay Area this past year. In just the short time I knew him, I found everything written about him in this notice to be true and I will miss him. He was on a spiritual journey here, and I am sure he is with God right now asking some very tough questions!
