C. Bierman Obituary

C.Warren BIERMAN, MD C. Warren Bierman, MD, renowned Seattle Allergist and Pediatrician passed away in his sleep on January 4, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Dr. Bierman was a Seattle resident for more than 40 years and treated thousands of children throughout the world. He grew up in Harrisburg, PA, attended Harvard University, and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1947. After internship and residency at New York University, he worked as an army physician for 2 years at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma. In 1952, he received board certification in Pediatrics, entered part-time practice, and was appointed Pediatrician-in-Chief at King County Hospital. In 1965, he attained board certification in Pediatric Allergy. He then served as Chief of the Division of Allergy at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle from 1966-1994. He was appointed clinical professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine from 1959-1997, when he became emeritus. With his partner, Dr. William Pierson, he initiated the Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center in 1964, which has now grown to a large practice providing specialized patient care with clinics throughout Washington state. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Bierman made major research contributions to the understanding and treatment of childhood asthma. With Dr. Pierson, he founded a non-profit research group, "Associated Scientists To Help Minimize Allergies" -- A.S.T.H.M.A., Inc. He produced 161 original papers, 115 scientific abstracts and 50 book contributions, and served on editorial boards for Allergy Proceedings, Clinical Reviews in Allergy, Journal of Asthma, and Internal Medicine Bulletin. The third edition of his book, Allergy, Clinical Immunology and Asthma, which is a standard reference book used in the field, was released in 1996. Dr. Bierman was also very active in professional organizations, serving on the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI), the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), and as both member and president (in 1974) of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Allergy. His scientific and professional contributions were honored in 1986, when Dr. Bierman received the prestigious Bret Ratner Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the highest honor bestowed in pediatric allergy. In 1991, the AAAAI further honored him, by forming the C. Warren Bierman Commemorative Lectureship Award which is awarded annually to a noted lecturer. Dr. Bierman's collaborations extended internationally. He spent a year in Paris, France, doing immunological research on premature infants. Two sabbaticals took him to University College in 1978-79 and again to Guys Hospital in 1989 -- both in London, England. In 1986 he helped to found the Trans-Pacific Allergy-Immunology Society, a component organization of the A.A.A.A.I., which he served as president and treasurer. In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Bierman had many personal interests and hobbies. He was an avid bicyclist, and enjoyed snow-skiing, hiking, swimming, and gardening. His backyard wine-making hobby led to an affiliation with 11 other U.W. professors and the initiation of Associated Vintners, the first premium winery in Washington State, which later became Columbia Winery. He will be missed by the many individuals who knew him as doctor, colleague, mentor, and friend. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Joan Wingate Bierman. He is survived by his four daughters, Margot Bierman, Karen Bierman-Plut, Charlotte Maxwell, and Barbara Ferrier, and his nine grandchildren, Molly Bierman, Erin, Cale, and Liliana Plute, Robert and Michael Maxwell, and Sarah, Robin, and Angela Ferrier. Memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 10 at 4:30 pm at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Laurelhurst.

Dr. Bierman saved my life more than once and encouraged me to live life! I first met Dr. Bierman when I was nine months old. I was hospitalized at the University. Without his gentle care and wisdom my life would be very different! He proudly paraded me around as a 6'1" teen-ager; proud that the medicines he gave me didn't hamper my growth. When I told him my uncles were 6'6" he smiled and sent me off to catch a steelhead to share with him! When I traveled in foreign countries he gave me contact doctors who were always happy to "treat" me because of their respect for Dr. Bierman. What a rare individual.

I first met & worked with Dr. Bierman in 1970 when I was working at the Univ. of WA/Pediatrics. In 1972 I was visiting family in Penna. when he called me & offered me a job in his private office (at that time I was Beccy Miller). I worked with him until the late 70's when I moved to Juneau. He was a wonderful friend & boss and a true inspiration to me.

My love and prayers to all his family.
