Daniel Caine Obituary

Daniel M. Caine

On January 6, 2015 the world lost a truly remarkable human being in Daniel M. Caine. He was a wordsmith, poet, emcee, speech coach, motivator, counselor, friend, and, most of all, a dedicated family man who loved with his entire heart and soul.

Dan Caine was born on November 1, 1942 in Redondo Beach, California. He attended schools in Los Angeles, graduating from Loyola High School, Loyola University of Los Angeles, and from UCLA Law School in 1967. He served as a Navy JAG, and for two years was the Legal Officer of the aircraft carrier USS KITTY HAWK. Dan met the Love of his life, Joan, in San Diego in 1971 and they married in 1972. After practicing Law for a short time in San Diego, Dan and Joan moved to Seattle in 1974. Dan was in private practice until 2014, with a number of law firms, retiring from Ryan, Swanson & Cleveland. His practice emphasis was on commercial lending and bankruptcy. Over his career, he was included in several publications' lists of Best Lawyers.

Dan was a past-chair of the King County Bar Association's Bankruptcy Section and of the Washington State Bar Association's Creditor-Debtor Section. For several years in the 1970's and '80s, Dan was the Secretary (administrator) of the Seattle Committee on Foreign Relations, affiliated with the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He was also a member of and the Chair of the Governor's Small Business Improvement Council. Dan published several articles and poems; his work appeared in several publications, including Washington State Bar News, San Francisco Daily Journal, Puget Soundings Magazine and Legal Studies Forum. Dan was a frequent speaker at Legal Education seminars and trade association meetings, and instructed professional groups and junior high school students on public speaking. He was a long-time member of and a Past-Chair of the Seattle Navy Seafair Committee and was also a member of the Great War Society, and the US Navy League. Dan was recently presented with the Honorable Sidney C. Volinn Award for his lifetime of distinguished service to the Creditor/Debtor and Insolvency Bars of the State of Washington and the Eastern and Western Districts of the State of Washington.

Dan enjoyed hiking, traveling to historic sites, playing tennis and was an avid reader. One of the joys of his life was spending time with good friends and family.

Dan is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joan; daughters Christy (Stephen) Hiers of Hawaii and Colleen of San Diego; and his two beloved Grandsons, Luke (5) and Quinn (1) Hiers.

In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, please make a donation of your time, talents, or finances to a cause that benefits your community.

A Memorial Service for Dan will be held at a later date TBD.

What Shock!! Worked closely with Dan when I was President of Peoples Leasing back in the late 70s and early 80s. He was simply The Very Best attorney I ever worked with and became a True Friend. We just seemed to loose track of each other after 2008. I guess that's life. So sad!! My belated, but heart felt Sympathy to Joan and the girls.....

Just learned of Dan's death and was so sorry to hear of his too early exit. Dan was a true gentleman - among the very best in Seattle's legal community. I treasured his friendship and wisdom during my years of practice in the bankruptcy bar.

I am so sorry to learn of Dan's passing. We knew each other since the late 70s and I cherished our conversations about current events over occasional lunches. Dan was one of the nicest people that I knew. I was proud to call him my friend. I will miss you.

Danny Boy we miss you severely
We loved you so dearly
Your famous smile
Quick with a verse
Never terse
I'm not gonna feel worse
For a long while
I am just feeling so short-changed I didn't get to hug you one more time
See you on the other side
Your lawyer-poet friend from P-town

PS: They needed some good help running things up there, couldn't think of a finer man for the job.
PPS: Your family knows only too well what a wonderful man you were - but please may they all take some solace in knowing there are hundreds of us out in the World that know it too.

Just wanted to say Joan & your family are in my thoughts. I wish I had the opportunity to meet you & Dan under different circumstances. It was a pleasure to work with Dan & get to know him in the time he was at PMSV. He was a thoughtful, funny man that loved his girls. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I did not know Dan well, but what I did know was an attorney who was a class act at ALL times. He will be sorely missed in a profession that is often short on his mannerisms. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

Dan, Frank and I first met in 1956 as Freshman at the High and almost immediately became very good friends for the next 60 years. Throughout high school and college we were almost inseparable. Dan will always be in my prayers and memory. In life you usually only have a few very close and lifelong friends and losing one, as Dan was to me and Frank, is not easy to accept. Rest in peace, my friend

Thinking of you all at this difficult time! His greatest legacy is raising two amazing daughters with Joan and in turn the memories and values that you all will impart on Luke and Quinn.
