Edward Deligan Obituary

Edward William DELIGAN Today we celebrate the life of a man dearly loved by his family, friends, and countless students. Ed passed away February 7th from complications due to pneumonia and Parkinson's disease. He was born in 1926 in Seattle and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1944. He worked for Boeing during WWII as a teen courier. Ed graduated from the University of Washington and then became a business teacher at Garfield High School in 1951. It was there he met his future wife, Joanne Forbes. In 1967 he switched to Roosevelt High School to head the business department where he remained until his retirement in 1985. Ed's love of life, gardening, personal finances, fishing, and his family became his trademarks. Through years of being a Boy Scout leader, to a swim team supporter, to his work with the Seattle Retired Teachers Association, he always kept busy helping out the community. When not visiting with his kids or grandchildren, he could often be found tinkering around in his yard battling the moles or at the family beach cottage in Marysville. As a business teacher he enjoyed tracking the stock markets and often helped friends and family with their taxes. His kindness and generosity were legendary. Ed is survived by his wife, Joanne; children, Steve (Shan), Todd (Claire) and Sara Hooper (Grant); his grandchildren, Gavin and Rory Hooper, and Olivia and Audrey Deligan; his sister-in-law, Nota; his niece, Margaret Dupper and family; and nephew, John Deligan. Our family thanks the staff at the Saint Ann Nursing Center in Meadowbrook. Their care and attention to his dignity for the past two years was remarkable. Well done Dad! Celebrate his life with us at Saint Matthew Church, 1240 NE 127th, Seattle, WA 98125, on Monday, February 13th, at 11:00 a.m. Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Remembrances to the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation, P.O. Box 56, Mercer Island, WA 98040.

Dear Deligan Family,

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Deligan's passing. He was a very sweet man, and I enjoyed his company very much. Although it's been over 20 years since I spent time with your family, the memories of that time I hold close to my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time and always.

If asked who a favorite teacher would have been growing up, "Mr. Deligan" would have certainly come to mind (Roosevelt High School 1978-1981). His label of "Sir Dave" was a humorous, albeit respectful address he bestowed on me each time we interacted. His classes were fun, as he was obviously passionate about the business environment, which for me, was a welcome and interesting departure from the typical, bland course cirriculum. To my shock, I learned of Mr. Deligan's residency at St. Annes during a final visit to a long-time family friend, who passed away only two days after our visit in January, when I saw his name on a room door - an unbelievable, sad coincidence I'll never forget. I'll always be thankful for the contribution you made in my life, sir, and my condolences go out to your family.

Dear Mrs. Deligan - I met Mr. Deligan at a time when many girls are searching for the role models we all need - loving father, devoted husband, all around good-guy. He was all of these things to many people. It was always a comfort to know that Sara and I could come home from college, and that I could really "feel at home," as well. Ed was loved and will be missed - Tera Semanko

Mrs. Deligan,,

I am thankful through my relationship with Sara to have had the honor to be friends with Mr. Deligan. He was a priceless human being and the salt of the earth. He will be missed by all but I am truly thankful for the time I had known him. As I always told Sara, she was indeed blessed with having a magnificient set of parents.

Deligan family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Although I didn't know Ed, I know Sara and she is a wonderful person. They say "the apple does not fall far from the tree". Ed must have been a good tree.
