Frances North Obituary

Frances Codiga NORTH Frances was born on Mar. 26,1919 and died Mar. 3, 2003 secondary to complications of Parkinson¹s Disease. Her father, Archie, was a Swiss-Italian immigrant who started the Codiga Dairy Farm in the Duwamish Valley in the early 1900¹s. Her mother, Anna, was a professional singer and local school teacher. Frances, the eldest of five Codiga children, had her own milk delivery route for the Codiga Farm during her high school years. In 1942 she married Jim North, who went on to play professional football for the Washington Redskins, before he started a 30 year high school coaching career. Frances became involved in politics and served for 8 years as a North Bend Councilwoman. She was elected to serve as the 47th District State Representative in Olympia from 1973-1983. While in the House of Representatives, Frances sponsored a bill to save Mount Si from clear cut logging, allocating money to establish the Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area - the first in a growing network of future established conservation areas. Lawmakers voted to rename Mount Peak near Enumclaw to Mount Frances in honor of her efforts at preserving natural habitats. Frances was a supporter of Childrens Services of Sno-Valley, Kennedy High School in Seattle, along with being a life long advocate for animal causes. She served on the board of directors for the National Bank of Tukwila. She enjoyed world travel, gardening, and her menagerie of well loved cats and dogs. Frances was preceded in death by her sisters Emma Lund and Joan Voss, her brother Vincent Codiga, and her husband Jim North. Frances and Jim celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. Survived by her brother, James Codiga, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend our gratitude to her loving caregivers at Medina Heights. Services will be held Sat., March 8, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 39025 SE Alpha St. in Snoqualmie. Donations may be made to PAWS, Lynnwood or King County Humane Society, Bellevue, WA.
