Garold Malcolm Obituary

Garold Dean Malcolm

Garold Dean Malcolm was born on April 25, 1940 in Belle Fourche, SD. During WWII, his family moved to Richmond, CA and later to North Pole, AK, where he finished high school. Gary studied architecture at the University of Alaska and University of Oregon, where he obtained his degree. During his career as an architect, he worked at firms in San Francisco and New York City before becoming a partner in McAdoo, Malcolm and Youel, in Seattle. Notable projects that he designed were the Des Moines Library, the Lakewood Fire Station and, closest to his heart, the Washington Park Arboretum Visitors Center. Gary was also a third degree black belt in karate, and studied and taught at the Matsumura Kenpo dojo at Montlake in Seattle for almost three decades. He was an avid birder, an enthusiastic reader, and a prolific storyteller, famous for his cheesecake and oyster stew. Gary passed away on Dec 27, 2016 in his home due to complications of Alzheimer's disease. He is preceded in death by his beloved mother Ellen Cameron, his father Gifford Malcolm and sister Judy Coonfield. He is survived by his wife Lucia, his daughters Heather Malcolm, Allison (Eugene) Malcolm-Carroll, and his step daughter Crista (Michael) Blood. He is also survived by twin grandsons, Thomas and Maxwell Carroll and a granddaughter, Cameryn Blood. Gary also leaves behind many close friends and family. The family would like to thank Debbie Sebers and Imelda Nera, the caregivers who loved and cared for Gary in his final weeks. Your compassion is truly appreciated. We hope that friends from all corners of his life will join us for a celebration of his life, to be held Monday, January 9 at noon at Price Helton funeral home, 702 Auburn Way North, Auburn, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association. alz.org

Gary was so engaging. Always warm, and welcoming the opportunity to visit. Our shared love for Alaska was one of his favorite conversation topics. So sad. Prayers to Lucia, Crista and other members of Gary's family.

Gary was my Godfather and I have many fond memories of him from my younger years. I guess life took us in different directions. He was always fun to be with when our families got together and thinking of him makes me smile. Rest in Peace, Gary.

Such a kind, wonderful handsome man. RIP Gary, you will be missed by many. My condolences go to my loyal and long time friend Lucia. I am so sorry for your loss. You two had many great adventures and you were his rock until the end. Bless you. My thoughts and prayers are with you Crista and Gary's daughters.
