Gilliat Schroeder Obituary

Gilliat G.

Schroeder, Jr.

1941 ~ 2017

Gil Schroeder died on December 24, 2017 at the age of 76, in Rancho Mirage, CA. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to Margaret (Wood) and Gilliat Schroeder, Sr., and grew up in Wawa, PA. After graduating from Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, he began college at the University of Pennsylvania, left for three years to serve in the U.S. Navy, then returned to Penn and received his BA degree in 1967.

His professional career began in banking before he joined Smith Barney in Philadelphia. In 1974, he and his family moved to the Seattle area where he continued his long career with Smith Barney until 2006 when he retired as Senior Vice President-Investments/Senior Portfolio Manager.

During that time, Gil was very involved in a number of community organizations and held Board positions with the Seattle Aquarium Society, Lifetime Advocacy Plus, Pacific Northwest Research Institute, and Seattle Kiwanis. He was also a member of the University Club and the Sons of the American Revolution. Over the years, the education and welfare of young people became a primary focus of both Gil and his wife, Sherry; support was provided to the Seattle Children's Museum, Issaquah Schools, Bellevue College, and Central Washington University.

After retirement, Gil and Sherry spent the winter seasons at their Palm Desert home at Silver Sands Racquet Club. Gil enjoyed playing tennis with his Silver Sands neighbors and then became passionate about golf. He joined several golf clubs, including Glendale (Bellevue, WA), Desert Island and Stone Eagle (Coachella Valley), and Somersett (Reno NV); to his dismay, none of them improved his handicap.

During the last few years, Gil took a particular interest in the future of California State University, San Bernardino/Palm Desert Campus. He provided seed money for the development of a neurofeedback program for learning difficulties and posttraumatic stress disorder. He was also a major sponsor for the development of a Hospitality Management Program at the Palm Desert Campus.

Gil had a passion for learning and was a voracious reader; there were few topics that he didn't explore. He also loved the outdoors and shared his enthusiasm with his family and friends who learned not to trust his sense of direction. He enjoyed fly fishing, hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, and spending time at the family cabin in the Teanaway Valley. He also enjoyed gardening, bridge, cooking and travel.

Gil dearly loved his family...they were the joy of his life. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sherry Brooks Schroeder; his adult children, Gabrielle Schroeder Fox and Gilliat G. Schroeder; his son-in-law, Curt Fox, and his daughter-in-law, Lisa Schroeder; his five grandsons, Bradon and Chanler Fox, and Lucas, Gavin and Henry Schroeder; and his sister, Florence Ervin. He also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his friends, neighbors, cousins, nieces and nephews. His optimism, vision and generous heart will be missed by many.

Any donations on his behalf can be made to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance or the national Leukemia And Lymphoma Society.

Sherry, family and friends - Gil's passion for learning, loving you all plus enjoying creation and providing so much for others through his philanthropic support, will continue to have a grand lasting effect.
May you find a measure of comfort in God's words, "Now, however, these three remain: faith, hope, love; but the greatest of these is love."

Dear Sherry, Sammy and I were sorry to learn that Gil had died. We last saw you at our house on one Christmas Eve in the 80's before you were married. We had a very happy few hours together. For some reason, we thought you both had moved back east, never realizing that you were still in Seattle. I'm sorry, because Gil and I came up through the Smith Barney ranks in the firm's very best days and we got on well with each other. For different reasons, we both transferred to the Smith Barney Seattle branch in 1974 -- and we enjoyed each others' company. He had a wonderful sense of humor with always a bright light in his eye. We thought you were a lovely girl and were very happy that he had found you. Oddly, I never knew he graduated from Westminster. My maternal grandfather was the Headmaster of that school for nearly 15 years. I would have loved to grill Gil about his experience there. We wish you and all the children our very best. Gil was one of the best himself. Fondly, Sammy and Bill
