Years ago (10 years?) I heard about you being at La Push and I doubted all the stories I heard about you until I found out you were parking your camper and sleeping at the graveyard to be with your past away friends. Then I had to meet you. After quizzing my family history you said, Irene was your mom?! I used to love her. Her parents Roy and Rosie spoke the exact same Quileute dialect as me. I could be your father. Just finished reading Twilight on the Thunderbird for the second time and ordered another copy as a gift for a friend. Awesome book! Should be required reading for all Quileutes. By the way I have recently volunteered to be on a language committee to teach Quileute to the Quileute. Such a pleasure to have know you.

Thank you dear Howard for including all of us in the Seniors Making Art family in your teachings. Thank you for being a light to thousands, lifting us up through your love, stories and amazing lessons in creativity and life. We worked, laughed, and cried together as all families do. You walked in wisdom beside us for which we will be forever grateful. Love and blessings to you and Joanne.

I choose to remember him as younger than his years, a vital man who would run when he could have walked, who could outwork any two men at his side. A man who could be as hard as nails on any person who did wrong but always put out a helping hand for those in need or injured. Especially the lesser among us such as any animal or someone who had been unfairly beat down.
He had a marvelous singing voice and sang not only the songs of his People but also many Big Band era standards. Accapella, which ain't easy.
Intelligent and wise. Intelligence and wisdom are not actually frequent companions, a person can be brilliant and unwise, or just he opposite such as the fictional Forest Gump. Howard was piercingly intelligent and possessed great wisdom. (or) Perhaps the wisdom possessed him.
He dropped pebbles in the pond. When one drops a pebble into a pond the ripples spread out and go across, then reflect and go somewhere else, then again and so forth until the energy of the ripples is overtaken by ripples from another pebble. This is a metaphor for dropping ideas on people during conversation and letting them travel as far as that idea has worth. Sometimes the idea has merit and is picked up and rebroadcast by others, and so on until the ideas spreads across the world and becomes a new way forward.

As the brother of my father, Jack, I've always thought of you as the interesting Uncle who was an amazing artist. I've felt a connection with you throughout my life as I share your passion for creating and teaching art.
cKulell (Seagull), may you rest and live in harmony with the Great Spirit, now and always.

I took art classes from Howard for just over 4 1/2 years and learned so much, he was a fabulous teacher. He even made the scary (for me) type of drawing fun. Howard was always positive, gave great advice and encouragement and had me keeping a positive attitude thereby discovering even more talent. Howard was encouraging with any type of art I did and taught fundamentals and very advanced techniques, even within the same class. He shared stories of his life and experiences and was open and inclusive, with a great sense of humor. He took joy in his student's accomplishments. I will miss you Howard yet you live within your students heart.

I've always enjoyed hearing about the history of seafaring adventures and tales from Howard, my Dad's half brother. My Dad told many interesting stories about himself, Howard, and Grandpa Hansen living with Indians in La Push. At one point, I recall when I was young my Dad told me, Howard's what you would refer to as a 'Beatnik,' ha.. He was a talented artist & colorful writer. Now he's telling more of his stories to my Dad & GPa. Howard, may your spirit be soaring high.
Joanne, may you be comforted from the 'Hansen Tribe.'
Blessings and Peace,
Dudes & all of the Hansen Families

I had the honor of taking numerous drawing classes from Howard over the last eight years. Solid fundamentals of drawing were the least of what he gave me in those classes. He would tell us stories of his childhood on the reservation, and recount adventures he had as a younger adult. Sharing his native culture was a profound experience for me. I cried the last day of the first class I took, sad that it was the end of a great experience. Of course it was not the end - I took several more classes with him and enjoyed every one up until less than a year ago. He was a very special person and I think of him often. Rest in peace, Howard.

I can truly say that this man was the ONLY one that ever checked in on me and the kids (on a regular basis) after Dan's passing. He was always right on point and his concern for the kids and me was overwhelming. I/we will miss that. You will be forever in our hearts Howie. My guess is that you and Danny Boy are laughing it up right now and not having a care in the world. RIP my dear friend.
