Jana Layman Obituary

Jana Lee Layman

Jana Lee Layman passed unexpectedly at 41 on Jan. 13, 2020. Born on Sept. 22, 1978 in Seattle, attended Alki Elementary, West Seattle High School (1997 grad), and Northwest College of Art (Poulsbo, 2001 grad) with a BFA. She was full of joy, adventure and fun-loving. Her family, faith, and love of nature (especially the Puget Sound beach) was the focus of her vibrant, colorful artwork - ceramic, oil painting, water color, etc. Among many jobs she was an art teacher at Shorewood Christian School, a teacher at Salvation Army, Pottery instructor at the Alki Bathhouse and a Nanny. Hobbies included synchronized swimming, family road trips to National Parks, and singing on the worship team at church. Two mission trips to Mexico with West Side Presbyterian Church Youth influenced her faith greatly. She was loving, accepting of everyone and a friend to all. Her faith in God lifted her through many health problems and hardships; she genuinely valued her many friends and was committed to their lives.

She is survived by her beloved young children, Serena (10) and Joshua (9), who were the joy of her life, and her mother Linda A. Layman, brother Adam G. Layman, and grandmother Lois Snyder, and many other close family members and dear friends, including Jonathan. She was both an organ donor recipient and an organ donor.

The memorial service will be held at Trinity Church, 7551 35th Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98126 on Saturday, February 1st at noon.

In lieu of flowers, and if you wish, a donation may be made under Jana's Family Care Fund at www.trinityws.com/give.

I did not have the pleasure of meeting Jana. I do know how much Jonathan loves her. We are all left with a empty space, now, in our view of a better planet. My condolences and love to all her friends and family. A peach tree now grows in Cloverdale, California in memory of Jana.

Jana was one of the sweetest souls I ever met. I taught with her at Shorewood Christian School and had the joy of knowing her and her two wonderful children. She was an amazing person, mother, artist and friend. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. We all mourn her tragic loss. May you rest in the loving arms of Jesus and be at peace in heaven.

Jana was a kind, warm, gentle, friendly, and talented young woman with a strong faith in God the Son: the Lord Jesus Christ, God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit. I met her at Mars Hill West Seattle which is now Trinity Church West Seattle. She knew of my son and his best friend from school. She would take the time to visit with people, bring them to church, and spend time with mother's of young children. She loved her children and looked out for their welfare. Jana had a beautiful singing voice, and used her talents to serve at church, and her community. The last time I saw her was January 7th at a prayer meeting where I sat next to her. I will miss my dear sister in the Lord. My deepest sympathy to her two children, mother, brother, and grandmother.

I was very saddened to read Jana's obituary in the Times today. Jana was well loved by the faculty at West Seattle High School, in particular, the Art Department. My colleague, the late Bob Iverson particularly loved Jana. He considered her to be an exceptional person and an artist of the highest calibre. I totally concur. Jana had the special spark of talent and creativity that so few possess. Please know that my prayers are with you. God bless you all during this most difficult of times.

Jana,
You were a true friend that really listened. You loved God and shared Jesus with all that would listen. You showed your children all of God's beauty and creation. You are greatly missed on this planet. Love always, Betty

I am deeply saddened to learn of Jana's passing. She was truly a special person. Her warmth, friendliness, and kindness were apparent in every interaction. I will miss seeing her on Beach Drive, but will think of her with fondness when I take walks along the Sound.
