Joel Sundquist Obituary

Joel Harold Sundquist

Age 82, of Issaquah, WA. Died on July 6, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born on June 12, 1930 in Christine, North Dakota to Joel and Ellen Sundquist. Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Dorothy Lund of Kindred, ND. He is survived by his brother, W. Burton Sundquist of St. Paul, MN, and his loving wife of 57 years, Kathryn (Humphreys) Sundquist. He is also survived by his children, Stephen (Liann), Joan (James), and David (Leah) as well as five grandchildren, Leslie, Rachel, Henry, Charles, and Brianna.

After growing up on the family farm in North Dakota, Harold served in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict, stationed at March Air Force Base in California. There he met his future bride, Kathryn, on a blind date. He graduated from North Dakota State University, and together they moved to Seattle in 1959. He embarked on a 36-year career in finance at Boeing, along the way earning his MBA from the University of Washington, and retiring as the Director of Finance for the Propulsion Systems Division of Boeing Commercial Aircraft. Harold played American Legion baseball in his youth, later coaching his sons' Little League and soccer teams. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed camping and exploring the Pacific Northwest, gardening, driftwood sculpture, and golf. We will miss his kind and generous spirit, and hearing him break into song, always ready with a smile and good cheer.

A memorial service will be held at East Shore Unitarian Church, 12700 SE 32nd Street, Bellevue, on August 4, 2012 at 10 a.m. The family suggests memorial gifts to The Washington State Parks Foundation; P.O. Box 891; Olympia, WA 98507.
