John Finch Obituary

John Geoffrey FINCH, Ph.D. The Holy Spirit breathed new life into John Geoffrey Finch on the afternoon of January 1, 2004. He was embraced by his family as he passed away peacefully, following a gradual decline in recent years from Alzheimer's Disease. Dr. Finch, 89, lived in the Tacoma/Gig Harbor area for the past 46 years. Born April 24, 1914 and raised in India, Dr. Finch came to the the U.S. with his children, Jennifer and John and his first wife, Gladys in 1946. He was a Methodist, then a Presbyterian minister for many years, and spent about two years in the U.S. Army as a chaplain. In 1958 he earned his Ph.D. from Drew University in New Jersey where he met his wife, Dagi. His career as a Christian psychologist spanned nearly four decades. His passion was spiritual direction and leading people to the Holy Spirit on what he called the "Journey Inward". Dr. Finch was a world traveler, visiting each continent, but found Antarctica to be his Garden of Eden. He enjoyed the company of his family on many of these trips. While at home, he cherished his dogs and loved to watch the many birds around the bird feeder. He was a prolific writer and continually searched for a more authentic self through the power of the Holy Spirit. Dr. Finch's famliy members include his ex-wife, Dagi Finch; daughter Jennifer Lewis (Al Mamarian) of Altadena, California; son John Finch II (Cindy) of Lake Forest Park; daughters Jillian Kane (Steve) of West Seattle, and Indra Finch (Bruce Gage) of Lakewood. Grandchildren are Ting Rutkowski, John Finch III, Trevor Hill, Alex and Zuzu Kane. Great-grandchildren are Cody and Carly Rutkowski and Madeline and Hank Finch. He is also survived by his dear friend, Annette Weyerhaeuser. Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 9, at Haven of Rest, Gig Harbor. I was so pleased to be included in John's life. He was strong, sure, and unfailingly cheery. He may not always have been right-none of us are-but he was never in doubt! I will miss him.
