Dr. John Stuart "Jack" Gladwell

John Gladwell Obituary

Dr. John "Jack" Stuart GLADWELL Dr. Gladwell enjoyed a rich life without focus on worldly goods, but accumulated the wealth of human affection and admiration. He died peacefully, at age 73, Monday, January 2, 2006, embraced by his loving and adoring wife of 45 years, Gail, and his two daughters, Jennifer Hiemstra and Carolyn Gladwell. Born in Panama, the only son of an American businessman and a British colonialist. He served in the US Army and was a Mason since 1957. Dr. Gladwell held two bachelors degrees from Trinity University and Texas A&M University, an MS of Civil Engineering from Texas A&M, and a PhD from the University of Idaho. With passion, he was a professor of Civil Engineering, did extensive water resources and hydraulic research, and ended his professional career as an international diplomat for 12 years with UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization) in Paris, France. Regarded as a world expert, he authored numerous publications and technical journals and lectured internationally on hydrology and water management. Dr. Gladwell enjoyed immensely traveling and entertaining with his wife, and spending time with his daughters, son-in-law, Syb Hiemstra, and grandchildren, Marten and Madeline. He was greatly admired for his intelligence, honesty, integrity, humility and humor. He struggled with a rare neuromuscular disease, Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS), and was treated with dignity and respect by his medical team. Celebration of Life service to be held at St. Margarets Episcopal Church in Bellevue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Pastoral Care, Covenant Shores, 9150 Fortuna Drive, Mercer Island, WA 98040.

To the family of John gladwell, I wish that I could have met him for I think he was a cousin. I found his book and I am the great great grand child of Mary Salina Gladwell the daughter of Esteline (not related at all to JEB Stuart. .We also know his descendants). I wish I could have met my grandmothers family. After Esteline died when my great grandmother was no more than 9 she and her younger brother were sent to live with other families. She was sent to the Hugh Crawford family. I am not sure if her brother went to, but they stayed in contact and he married a cousin of my grandfather. I was told that she cried every night. She missed her family. I hope they are reunited now. I thank your father/ husband for documenting his part of the story. So much was lost of Esteline and John, as my great grandmother was so young when died. I hope your father has the rest of the story now. I hope you continue to record the next generations.

Jack was inspirational, even to the very end. The manner inwhich he lived his life was one of dignity and grace. His illness took nothing away from his passion for living and learning. He will be sorely missed.

I have many fond memories of growing up and spending time with Dr. and Mrs. Gladwell as a good friend of their daughter Jeni. Dr. Gladwell always had a smile and was interested in what was new in my life. I know he will be missed tremendously by his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love, Beth
