John Smidt Obituary

John Douglas "Doug" SMIDT Born May 23, 1936 in Beatrice, Nebraska to M. Vivian (Biddy) and John D. Smidt. He passed away quietly and peacefully on February 22, at his home on Camano Island, surrounded by his loving wife and many family members. In his early years, he lived in Wapato, Eatonville, Morton, and Enumclaw. The family then settled in Parkland, Washington, where he graduated from Clover Park High School in 1954. While there he lettered in football and track, and set the league record for the 220 yard dash, which stood for many years. He was the first student in the United States to receive his pilot's license through a high school flight program. His family remembers Doug soloing in the morning and getting his driver's license in the afternoon - on his 16th birthday.Doug joined the Marine Corps Reserves after high school, and attended the University of Washington where he affillated with Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He finished his college at Oregon State University, then joined the Naval Cadet Flight program, getting his wings in the spring of 1958. Doug, through both active and reserve flying in the Marines, retired as a major, after 20 years. Throughout his military and commercial career, he flew more than 31 types of aircraft, ranging from helicopters to fighter jets to Boeing 767's. Doug spent more than 30 years as a commerical pilot, beginning with American Airlines, flying for Alaska Airlines to the North Slope, Standard Airways, where he qualified for the left (captain's) seat at the age of 30, and then, for more than 28 years flew for PSA/US Air, retiring to Camano Island approximately 10 years ago. Doug is survived by his wife Nancy, her son Chad, daughter Chelsea, his three sons, two daughters, and six grandsons. Booth and Fran Smidt and son Austin, of Santa Marguerita, California, Rick Smidt and sons Zachary and Dillon of Denver, Colorado and Bradley and Gabriella Smidt and sons Bradley, and Andrew, of Oceanside, California. Love to my only big brother. We attended school together from kindergarten through my first year of college -- my best friend all of those days. I love you, miss you, and most of all, I honor you; for your always being there for me, for being a big brother who inspired me to have my four awesome kids, and who showed me that life was to be lived. You never forgot my birthday, and I will always remember your, "I love you, Sis." I love you, too; always and all ways.

Dear Family,

i was so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He truly made a difference in school, with his sports, his easy going manner, he had many friends. I did not know of him after school but after reading his obituary in the paper, I know how proud you must be of him and all his accomplishments.

My sincerest regards and sympathies go to his wonderful family,

Dear Family and Friends,

Uncle Doug, as I call him, will be missed by many and remembered fondly for his great stories and his contributions in life. He was many things to many people - oldest son, father, husband, big brother, fishing buddy, a great pilot, loyal friend - the list goes on. That is the thing about Uncle Doug, he lived life to the fullest in ways that many of us only dream about. I will miss him very much, but I have many fond memories to keep him close by.

Dear Nancy and family: The Clover Park class of 1954 will miss Doug at our 50th reunion which is planned on August 7, 2004 at the Tacoma Country Club. The loving obituary you and your family wrote on his behalf which appeared in the Seattle Times/PI has been shared with the Reunion Committee which meets tomorrow in Lakewood. We will take time during our lunch to honor his memory. We remember the wonder stories told at the 40th reunion. Gayle Switzer Hammermaster gives her warm regards to you. She was Girls Club President while Doug served as Boys Club President during our senior year. I also played football with Doug and ran (not as fast, however) on the track time and remember his intense look as he rounded the final curve to win the 220 event many times during the year. He joyful spirit will be missed. Paul R. Meyer, Class of 1954.
