Jon Karl Kummen

A Man for All Seasons

Jon was a man of strength, spirit, integrity, empathy and over all goodness. Born in Toronto in 1944, Jon moved with his family to his father's homeland, Norway, at the end of the war. Three years later they returned to Canada, and when Jon was 14, they moved to the Seattle area. Jon graduated from Issaquah High School in 1962, went on to college, and was drafted into the army, serving two years in Germany. After his discharge, Jon went back to SPU, earning his degree in education. Jon joined the Mercer Island School District where he met his wife Donna. Jon spread the love of learning to hundreds of students for thirty years until his retirement in 2001. After his retirement, Jon spent two years getting his airplane mechanic's certification, and maintained his own and his friend's planes.

Jon loved flying his Bonanza, volunteering, cooking, entertaining, and dancing. He could fix anything, and he loved a good joke. A proud regular at the Sons of Norway, Jon was a man of varied interests, who enjoyed people. He relished planning trips, especially to Norway.

He will be missed by his wife, Donna Driver-Kummen, son, Chris (Melissa), grandchildren Molly and Jamie, sisters Randi and Nancy, brother-in-law Bill Driver and his family, a large extended family in Norway, his devoted kitty, Boo, and many dear friends. Jon was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend.
