Josef Scaylea Obituary

Josef SCAYLEA 1913-2004 The Man and "The Mountain" are now one. On July 19th, as the setting sun tinted Mt. Rainier pink-golden, Joe died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and a gallery of a lifetime of his photographic works. Chief Photographer of the Seattle Times for 35 years, his photographic awards from Look, Life, Graflex and the National Press Photographers Association were numerous. However, Joe's greatest reward was shooting photos for his viewers that captured the essence of his passion for the Northwest: majestic mountains, white water rivers, fog shrouded coastal monoliths, moss draped rainforests, fields of tulips, classic lighthouses, pioneer barns, farmers, fishermen, loggers, tribal elders, dusty cowboys, families at play, soaring eagles, swans in flight, horses cavorting at dawn, Husky crew races, wind-filled spinnakers on Lake Washington, Mt. Baker sunrises, the Space Needle, Seattle panoramas, and of course, "The Mountain." His gallery, the sale of his photographs, and the legacy of his collection and books will be managed and preserved by his four daughters Michele, Jodene, Jill and Annette. Soon you will be able to view many of his photographic works at www.josefscayleaphotography.com. You may also contact the office at (206) 523-5824. The Museum of History and Industry received a donation of historic photos from Joe in 1993. Joe's photographic passion and expertise made him a mentor to aspiring photo journalists, to colleagues, and to everyday photographers to whom he always declared that the greatest picture could be created from their own camera if they only had it ready to shoot. His family has established a fund to assist aspiring photojournalists in their quest. Remembrances may be made to The Josef Scaylea Photography Mentorship Fund, HomeStreet Bank, Wedgwood Branch, 8200 35th Ave. NE, Seattle, WA, 98115. A Family Memorial Ceremony was held July 24. The family expresses gratitude for all the care, friendship, meals and desserts, prayers, calls, letters, visits, and loving support that made it possible for Joe to remain happily in his home to the end of his life. Joe will have two permanent resting places, the Skagit Valley and Mt. Rainier. His ashes will be buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery when the tulips bloom next spring. A portion of his ashes will also be scattered on Mt. Rainier later this summer . Joe and the Mountain are now one.

I collect old postcards and just found one of skiers at Stevens Pass ski resort unloading ski gear from their automobiles with beautiful mountain scenery in background. Picture taken by Josef Scaylea. I enjoyed a multitude of his amazing Pacific NW photos printed by the Seattle Times. How fortunate we were. Thanks for sharing Josef

I will always remember the picture, of myself, taken by Mr Scaylea while "working" in my father's (McGrew Kidd) camera/radio repair shop on Howell Street, which appeared in The Seattle Times in about 1953. I was about three years old at the time.

I have a fond memory of Mr Scaylea.

In 1979 I purchased one of his photos. I was working of Washington Mutual at the time and the Wedgewood branch had some small prints of Mr Scaylea's displayed.

One day Mr. Scaylea came into the branch and I asked him in fun if he still had the negative for one of the prints. He said he did and that the print on display did not do justice to the original. I told him I would love to have an enlargement. About three weeks later he presented me with a beautiful matted and frame print. That picture is proudly hanging on on living room wall. The print is of Seattle's skyline with house boats in the foreground. I will always treasure the picture and the memory of how I got it.
