Laura Lorgen Obituary

Laura LORGEN Laura passed away on October 19, 2010 after a long, full life. She was born October 31, 1919 to Hans and Marie Jangaard on Valderøy, Norway, near the town of Aalesund, one of 14 children. In 1947, she married Leif Lorgen and they built their home in Lorgja on the island Ellingsøy. In November 1961, their sense of adventure led them to San Diego, CA. A couple years later, they moved to Seattle, WA, and settled in Ballard, which would be Laura's home for 47 years. Laura enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow Norwegians by being active in the Hospital Association at Norse Home, Sunnmørslaget and Sons of Norway, especially their bowling league and Norna. She served on the 17th of May committee that was instrumental in bringing the celebration to Ballard and she also further promoted her Scandinavian culture through her work with the Heritage Days, often demonstrating carding and spinning. At the annual Blessing of the Fleet, she represented fishing families by sharing her own experiences. She and Leif also enjoyed many road trips, often together with good friends. Laura is survived by her daughters Marie (K. John Jones) and Anne (Tim Knapp); five much loved grandchildren, Olivia, Seth and Lindsey Lorgen-Jones and Sabrina and Kirsten Lorgen- Knapp; sisters Martha Fauske Synes and Bergitte Nordstrand; sister-in-laws Nancy Jangaard, Lucille Jangaard, Ruth Jangaard and Margit Vik; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Leif; her son Leif-Arne; sisters Anna Grytten and Signy Solevåg; and brothers Kristian, Sigurd, Sverre, Olav, Hans, Lars, Karsten, Otto and Petter Jangaard. Her family gives a special thank you to the staff at Foss Village and Home. The loving care she received and the friendships she formed while living in the Village made for a good last year of her life. A celebration of her life will be held at the Leif Erickson Lodge, 2245 NW 57th St, in Ballard on Saturday, October 30, from 2pm - 5pm. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Foss Foundation at 13023 Greenwood Ave N., Seattle, WA 98133.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

October 27, 2010

My condolences to Marie and Anne and their families. I will join the words of my sister, Anne-Ruth, and add another few words. I have very good memories of aunt Laura. I think the last time I met her was in the summer of 1990, when I visited Seattle and all the Jangaards met in the big park. Everybody brough food and shared. And the food from aunt Laura I still remember: a salmon paté. Some days later I went with aunt Laura, uncle Leif and Marie's to Mt St.Rainer to hike in the mountain (Laura and Leif followed some of the way up). And one more memory: Once at Jangarden (Laura's birth place) when aunt Laura's visited around 1970, I fell and hit myself in the head. Aunt Laura was for some reason the one to help me, and after cleaning the cut, we went for a small walk. And she talked with me as if I was a grown-up. This is the first time ever I remember an adult talked to me that way. I was around 10-11 years by then.

My condolences. I remember aunt Laura making food for the celebration of her mother Maria's 90 years day on July 15th 1975 at Valderøy. I and my family were also there, helping to prepare the party. Her potato salad has followed me through the years, and I still make "aunt Lauras potato salad" some times. I still can't understand how we managed to feed and find a place for all the guests that day in the small house at Jangarden, people coming and going all day, as I remember it. And aunt Laura and her sisters and other helpers busy in the kitchen. The kitchen is still the same, as you know, Anne.

Anne-Ruth Jangaard, daughter of Laura's youngest brother Petter.

Laura worked at my sorority while I was in college, and I immediately fell in love with her warm smile and heart, and her zest for life. I hold her responsible for my freshman 13 pounds, but I enjoyed every bite! What a wonderful woman! Loved times with her at the Jones family get togethers. The world is a better place because of her beautiful life!

Aunt Laura will be missed by all that knew her. She was a great lady, lots of fun, intelligent and kind. I think I can speak for my Father, Kristian and say that she was one of his favorite sisters. I remember Leif, Laura and family coming to visit and how much fun we all had. Much love to the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
