Madeline Vickers Obituary

Madeline VICKERS Madeline Vickers, born May 6, 1917, died peacefully April 16, at her daughter's home, just shy of her 92nd birthday of complications from a blood disorder. Madeline grew up in Ridgefield, WA and met her husband of 38 years when he was a professional hockey player. They settled in Seattle to raise a family, making their home a popular summer gathering place with a backyard swimming pool. A career woman when most women weren't, Madeline assisted in the training of dental professionals at the UW School of Dentistry, retiring in the 1979 after 20 years. Always young of heart and mind, she enjoyed an active life, sang with "big bands", drove convertibles, and loved sports of all kinds. She enjoyed traveling the world, especially a tour to Cuba with the UW baseball team, a cruise on the Black Sea and a 1978 trip to China. She bowled on two teams until a few years ago when the lanes closed. Preceded in death by her parents and sister, husband Glenn and son-in-law Dennis Sakuma. Survived by her brother, John Burrow (Eunice), son Jim Vickers (Vanessa), daughter Georgia Vickers, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of NW Hospital Out-Patient Services and Providence Hospice of Seattle for their care and support. At her request, no services will be held. I was passing a mirror yesterday and thought I looked really tan, for me. My next thought is I will never be tanner than Georgia Vickers! My mind shot to Madeline, and remembered her as one of the sweetest women I have every known. Always a smile. More people should be like her. Has it really been this long?

Our sincere condolences to Georgia, Jim and families on the loss of your mother Madeline. Madeline worked with my mother Evelyn Richardson at the UW Dental School for many years. Madeline was an absolute joy to be around, always uplifting and full of fun. My son Geno and I have good memories of visits with my mom and Madeline, even when we lived in Honolulu. We were just remembering her on our most recent visit with my mother for Easter. We were all very sorry to hear the news of her passing and she will always have a special place in our hearts. May special memories bring you comfort at this difficult time. We will keep you in thoughts and prayers.

Thank you Mrs. Vickers for teaching me a big life lesson. You were so sweet when I sat in Dr. Feisel's dentist chair for endless hours in the early '60's that I learned not to be sullen and grumpy with someone who was just trying to help me. Even though I hated going to the dentist. I think often of the day I got out of the chair and, for the first time, said "thank you" through a numb and swollen mouth and remember how good it felt to be grateful and not sullen. Thank you Mrs. Vickers, I think of you often. Helen Burgher Hitchcock

Hi,
I knew Madeline from the TOPS group I joined 4 years ago. I really liked Madeline. She quit coming a couple of years ago because of her health. I'm sorry she is gone. She was so nice.
