Margaret Poole Obituary

Margaret R. (Peg) POOLE Peg Poole lived a life of care giving to others. Born on April 13, 1923 in Belgrade, MT, Peg grew up in Bozeman. She went to Montana State Univ. for 2 years where she joined pi beta phi before graduating from the Univ. of Minnesota in 1945 with a degree in nursing. She began her nursing career at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane rising to nursing supervisor of internal medicine. After taking a break to raise six children, Peg resumed nursing in 1973 at the NW Lipid Research Center. She worked with Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Robert Knopp in the Nobel prize winning research on lipids in men. She retired in 1986 but joined Providence Hospital as a volunteer in 1992 where she continued to console the sick up to her sudden death on July 17. Peg's life of service extended to her family, church, and community. She and her family moved to Mercer Island in 1961 where they joined St. Monica's Catholic Church. She was renowned in St Monica's and Mercer Island for her custard whenever any body was sick. She was a constant source of comfort to all whom she met. When she was not caring for friends or family, she was tending her garden. Peg is survived by her husband of 55 years, Harry, sons Joe (Michelle), Alan (Connie), Tom, Michael (Kim), daughter Maureen (Riley), grandchildren Meghan (Matt), Matthew, Nathan, Jennifer, Steven, and Amy, sister Pat, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter Brenda (1979) and brother Norman. Peg was the matriarch of our family and the light of our lives. We will miss her guidance, support, and laughter. Services are on July 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Monica's on Mercer Island. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to Friends of the Needy, C/o, 4301 88th Ave. SE, Mercer Island, WA 98040

I sat and cried when I got your email Harry.I still can't believe it. We were always going to get together again for lunch to talk. I loved her-she was so wonderful !!
We worked together at Harborview and she was always a delight to be with. I think of the many times I was at your house (my kids knew her too). It shows again-don't put off for tomorrow what you can do today! I could have called, I ALWAYS meant too, but "there is always tomorrow-right ?" God bless her"!!!! She was so special!! Best of luck to you and your kids getting through this very hard time. My love

Harry and family
So hard to believe Peg is gone--we must have e-mailed just before she died, and oh how we'll miss visiting and calling from Montana. I'm trying to get you on the phone, but no luck. What good friends all these years, and such fun having known her. Virginia and Jim Barfknecht

The loss of Peggy Poole will be felt by everyone who knew her. She was always there to support us through the good times and the bad and fed us well whenever the chance arose. I so appreciated the fact that she visited my mom often when she was ill last year. I will miss Peggy very much, but I know that she is at peace.

Seeing hundreds of people at Peg's memorial service, I was struck by this thought: when you live with an open and loving heart, this is what comes back to you. Peg was truly among the best. Here's a little-known secret I'll now share: she was also Santa. When my girls were little, Peg joyfully colluded with me to hide their Christmas presents in her den until Christmas morning. She got such a kick out of it. For that I'll forever love her.

No words can express our deepest sympathy to the Poole family at this most sad and difficult time. Peg was an absolute diamond. I know from all of my conversations with her over the years, what a kind, gentle and caring person she was. Always a smile and a positive word, that laughing sparkle in her eyes.....Her great nephew Jeran who only met her a handful of times remembers her in the same light....what a mark she has left on those she touched. We all love you Peg and we will miss you. Thank you for brushing all of our hearts with your beautiful soul.

Peg was the sunshine on our dreary winter days. She was always smiling and happy and made everyone she came in contact with feel extra special. She will be greatly missed at Swedish/Cherry Hill. We love you, Peg.

To the Poole family;
It's so hard to believe that your beautiful wife, mother & grandmother has gone home to her final resting place. I feel so blessed to have spent some time with her on their recent trip to Mn. She was a remarkable woman & will be missed by many. It was an honor to have known her.
My thoughts & prayers are with you all.
