Marvin Stein Obituary

Marvin STEIN Marvin Stein was born on October 17, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York; he hit the ground running and never looked back. He met the love of his life and ultimatesoul-mate, Yolanda, on a military base in Bindlach, Germany, where he was stationed in the U.S. Army. In 1959 they married in Yonkers, New York. He fathered two children in the early Sixties, back in the days when long beards and beaded necklaces were in vogue. Those accoutrements fell out of style at some point, but not for Marvin, who sported his salt-and-pepper beard and daughter-beaded necklace until the very end. After a brief stop in Los Angeles, his family landed in Seattle in 1972, where Marvin really found his groove. He and Yolanda soon built a highly successful business in interior design. This success afforded Marvin the opportunity to seek out his passions: art collecting, lapping days at the racetrack, travel, opera, and family barbecues. His calligraphy was impeccable, and his writing was as good with his left hand as it was with his right. And he could write upside down. He died peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, just after noon, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. His passing is difficult for those who loved him. He was a husband, a father, an uncle, a cousin, a grandfather, a mentor, a friend, a clown, and a voice encouraging us to accept ourselves, to question authority, and to laugh in the face of danger. He is survived by his wife, Yolanda; his daughter, Corey; his son, Garth; his grandchildren, Caleb, Eamon and Dashiell; his brother, Lester; and all the wonderful people he met in his life, who will carry with them the love he gave to all he knew. As we believe Marvin would wish, contributions can be directed to the ARDS Support Center or the Seattle Opera.

I was a client, but I also valued Marvin as a friend. I think of him occasionally of all the assistance he gave me over the dozen or so years that I knew him. He was a good man , and one that I could trust. He was a memorable man who life continues in my memory.

Surprised and saddened to learn of Marvin’s passing. He always had a very thoughtful and upbeat outlook on life. I enjoyed working with him. But after business it was fun listening to his stories and take on life. I will not forget his smile and twinkle of the eye or his courtesies. He cared and made a difference in this world. Also thank you Yolanda for sharing him with us.

Dear Garth and Family,
Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting your parents I am certain they must be lovely people, they raised such a wonderful son. My family and I send to you and your family our deepest sympathy at your great loss. May you and yours have only great joy in the future, and never forget all of the good times with your dad. With much love.

Marvin will be sorely missed! Though I had not seen him in quite a while, he and Yolanda always remained in my thoughts. (I saw a sporty little convertible just last week and Marvin came to mind.) I will never forget those wonderful times in their art-filled home. Marvin and Yolanda have always been people you look up to and want to emulate...good to the core! We will all miss that sparkle in his eyes and the wonderful laugh!

I'm shocked....I've just returned to Seattle from my fathers funeral. This is harder for me to comprehend. Marvin was a mentor, a friend, an enemy, a motivator, a classic competitor. I learmed great life lessons from him.

I was so lucky to have gotten to know Marvin, on his daily treks up to the Richmond Beach Q, for coffee and conversation. Seeing Marvin and Yolanda every morning was the best start to a day you could ask for! He always made me smile, and giggle a bit! I will miss his morning visits! Yolanda,... the rest of the crew and I are waiting to greet you with open arms, when you are ready to resume your walks. What a great man! xoxo Stacey

It is with deep regret that I learn of Marvins' death. In my mind I see such a splendid man with style, grace and a great business sense. He will be missed. Galen is out of the country and will be stunned and saddened to learn of his passing.
