Mary Harvey Obituary

Mary Ann Sedgwick Harvey

Mary Ann Sedgwick Harvey was born in Springfield, Missouri, on November 29, 1933, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Sedgwick, Sr. She died in Seattle on December 14, 2013.

Mary Ann graduated from Radcliffe College in 1955, and later received her M.A. degree in Russian Literature from the University of Washington.

A brilliant writer and communicator,

Mary Ann joined the Department of Pediatrics, University of Washington School of Medicine in the early 1970s, working as Medical Editor and Research Associate in the Dysmorphology Unit, directed by Dr. David W. Smith. She was proud to be a member of the team responsible for many medical breakthroughs and discoveries - such as American recognition of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Known for her high degree of collegiality and infectious enthusiasm, Mary Ann often provided helpful support and counsel to postdoctoral fellows, residents and medical students, and was one of those critical persons working behind the scenes who simply made things happen on time. Most important, she contributed heavily to the production of Dr. Smith's seminal text, Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation, one of the most widely used resources for healthcare workers evaluating developmental disabilities and related disorders in children and adults.

After Dr. Smith's death in 1981, Mary Ann joined the staff of the Hope Heart Institute, headed by Dr. Lester Sauvage, where she served for 20 years until her retirement, contributing a great deal to the field of cardiovascular medicine.

Mary Ann was predeceased by her beloved son Christopher (Slats) Harvey, her parents, and her brother, Frank L. Sedgwick Jr. She leaves behind a loving circle of friends including Dr. Phillip Chance, Sandy Goodwin, Ellen Hansen, Stan Emert, Dr. Neil Smith, Carol Alto, all of Seattle; Susan Pecszack and Marie Bardos of New York City; and countless others. They will miss her great dinner parties, her intellect, warmth, sense of humor, loyalty to her friends, and love of animals.

Remembrances may be sent to the Seattle Humane Society, 13212 Southeast Eastgate Way, Bellevue, WA 98005 or online at: www.seattlehumane.org.

Just found out Mary Ann was gone. Miss her Christmas Eve parties and her VW bug, her mumbling in Russian. She and my mother were good friends for a long time.

Mostly, I miss her wonderful sense of humor, her brilliant mind, and her kind and welcoming heart.
