Melvin Moehring Obituary

Melvin H. MOEHRING Of Boxford, Massachusetts, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Hyder Family Hospice House, Dover, New Hampshire. Mel was born in Seattle on February 13, 1930. A graduate of Queen Anne High School and University of Washington, he received his Master of Science degree at New York University. A month later, in June 1953, he married Jo Anne Trexler and they were blessed with five children. Mel served his country with the Air Force at Stead Air Force Base during the Korean War. Following his military service, he began a 35-year career with Sylvania Electric in their Lighting Division and retired in 1991 as the National Sales Manager. Mel enjoyed an active retirement. He traveled the world with his wife, family and friends. He was an avid gardener with a giant vegetable plot and shared the produce with neighbors and friends. A lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, most recently he was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Andover, MA. During the latter stages of his illness, Mel penned a column for the church newsletter titled "Reflections" which gave the hope of Jesus Christ to others. Mel will be greatly missed by his wife, his children: Karen and husband Kevin Smith, Dave and wife Eileen Moehring, Jennie and husband Ed Ortler, Becky and husband Dan Wilcox, and his eight grandchildren: Joel, Erin and Daniel Smith, Samuel Moehring, Hannah and William Ortler, and Colin and Sabina Wilcox. His son Paul Moehring predeceased him in 1994. He is also survived by his brother Norman and wife Elaine Moehring, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church, 360 S. Main Street, Andover, MA 01810, (978) 475-4059. At a later date a memorial service will be held in the Seattle area and his remains will be interred there. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home 167 Maple St. (rte 62) Danvers. On line guestbook at www.legacy.com. While I only know Mel through 2006 photos of him singing on the YMCA Camp Orkila stage for Camp's 100th anniversary, it is clear he had a big spirit and was well loved by many. Memorial gifts have been arriving to the YMCA Camping Services office to help send young campers to Mel's camp. Thank you all for your generosity.

I first met Mel when I joined Sylvania in Seattle in 1958. Our careers led us from sales to sales management. In 1970, I left Sylvania to return to San Diego, but Mel kept in touch. I'll miss hearing from Mel but will remember him as one of the really nice guys.

Mr. Moehring (I just can't think of him as "Mel" since I met him when I was 10!) was always generous, loving and had a great laugh. I plan to eat a big steak dinner at Smith & Wollensky in his honor!

I am thinking of you and send my love and prayers.

To the Moehring Family:

I will always be indebted to Mel for his guiding me to the light side of the light bulb (from finance to marketing). Mel was a great motivator, visionary, and a pleasure to have been a part of his sales organization. Mel was always very positive and available to everyone and will be remembered as one of the Great Ones at SYLVANIA. May God's perpetual light (bulb) always shine upon him, John Wilson
