ln the late 1970´s, I left the teaching profession and went to work as an underwriter trainee for Safeco Insurance.

Shortly thereafter, I went to the Home Office Underwriting Training School and it was there that I met Ray Hughes. The impact of his scholarly curriculum stays with me to this day.

Simply stated, Ray could have been a successful professor at any of the most prestigious universities in the country.

But, he chose the corporate world and for that I am grateful.

Over the years our professional paths would cross on many fronts.

Though I am thankful for knowing knowing him professionally, my gratitude goes far beyond that...especially on the spiritual front.

Despite Ray knowing that I was a practicing Catholic, he took the leap of faith and extended the invitation for me to go to his non-denominational church.

Admittedly, it was awkward at first. But, thirty-eight years later I call Mainers Church my spiritual home.

As great an impact as Ray had on my professional life, he set the table for me to grow spiritually.

For that I am eternally grateful.

Until we meet again...rest in peace.

As a long-time member of Safeco Insurance, I'm so saddened to hear that we lost one of our true leaders both personally and professionally. His legacy will live on in many ways.

My heartfelt condolences Lili and Natasha.
I was fortunate enough to work with Ray when I first started at Safeco and then later in my career. Ray was a tremendous tutor in my first three years where he helped me learn our business and how to work effectively with agents. He was a large figure beyond just his height, willing to push the envelope and take calculated risks while holding himself and others accountable to commitments and result. In one of my last roles at Safeco, my team worked closely with Ray to experiment with evolving distribution partners where we constantly tested, learned and greatly increased the business.
Ray was also a great friend who deeply cared about people and relationships. My boys still talk about the day Lili and Ray took us out on the Healani to go cruising and crabbing in the sound. My Dad and I often talk about how much fun it was spending time with Ray whether at work or over dinner. Dad always loved how Ray would push established company thinking to try new ways of assisting agents and growing revenue even when it might get him into some hot water. Agents loved Ray for his willingness to experiment and support them.
I will always miss Ray, my friend and tutor.
