Richard Winkenwerder Obituary

Richard Winkenwerder

Richard Winkenwerder passed away while on a walk August 2, 2017. He left as he wanted - comfortable and happy knowing he had accomplished his primary goals - leaving his wife, Bonnie, relatively free from worry and providing his children with the tools necessary to survive the challenges of life.

Dick was born in Yakima, WA, on September 10, 1930, to Clarence Francis and Helmi (Sandberg) Winkenwerder. He

attended Yakima Senior High School; Yakima Valley Junior College (Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society); Washington State College (Phi Beta Kappa and B.A. in Mathematics); the University of Washington (Math Department teaching assistant and graduate student); and Penn State College (B.S. in Meteorology).

Dick served five years (1953-1958) in the U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant and an additional three in the Reserves, attaining the rank of Captain.

Dick started his actuarial career in 1958, joining Milliman, Inc., now a global actuarial and consulting firm, in 1960. He became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and spent his career as a Principal with Milliman, Inc., retiring at the close of 1991. He was a specialist in retirement plans and investment issues and counted many Northwest firms (among others) as his clients.

He belonged to professional organizations serving as president or officer for many. He prided himself in professionalism, integrity, and doing his best.

He believed in helping others. He was a supporter of several charities and non-profit organizations, recognizing their services to the community were essential.

Dick believed in physical fitness and taking care of oneself - he enjoyed skiing, jogging, fishing and golf, among other things.

In the late 1970's, Dick and Bonnie visited, fell in love with Borrego Springs, CA, purchased a condominium, and wintered there until 2015.

Dick loved exploring. Hand in hand he and Bonnie enjoyed traveling to beautiful and interesting places around the world. This was a special part of their lives.

In 1996, they moved full time to their home on Hood Canal, a special place to both and a favorite gathering place for friends and family. While enjoying and playing, Dick also enjoyed the challenge of dock work.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; sons Alan Duff, John Alexander, and David Alan; daughters Jill Lee Winkenwerder, Lynn Leslee Grotjahn (Dave) and Heidi Marie Schooley (Chris); along with nine grandchildren, many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his only sibling, Dorothy Elder of Oregon.

Dick was a loving husband and father who lived life to the fullest each day. He worked hard and enjoyed playing. He shared his knowledge, loved generously, and laughed often. Lifetime memories of champagne cruises, dancing, hat nights and quiet sunsets. He will live in our hearts forever.
