Robert H. Tate

Robert H. TATE Robert H. Tate, of Bellevue, Washington, died June 8th of congestive heart failure. He was 83. Bob will be remembered for his genuine interest in people. He took pleasure in bringing people together to share ideas and foster relationships. He was active in his community, his family and with Seattle sports teams. His sunny disposition and sense of humor were hallmark qualities. He was born February 19, 1926, to Genevieve Howell and Roy Tate. Raised in Portland, Oregon, with his three sisters, Bob graduated from Franklin High School where he played baseball, basketball and football. He attended the University of Washington in the Navy V12 Program. He played baseball making the All-Northern Division Team while Captain and Inspirational Award Winner. Bob played Semi-pro Baseball for four years before beginning his distinguished career in education and the Navy. He married at twenty-four, lived on Mercer Island and raised three daughters. He taught and coached at Garfield HS in Seattle 1949-1960, was Vice-Principal of Queen Anne HS 1960-65, Principal of Cleveland HS 1965-68 and Principal of Mercer Island HS 1968-71. Before retiring in 1980, he worked in the Administrative Offices of Mercer Island School District. Captain Bob Tate retired as Commanding Officer, Naval Air Reserve Staff T1 with 35 years of active and reserve duty. Naval accomplishments include: Naval Aviation Rendezvous Award for Outstanding Contribution to Naval Aviation; President, Seattle Council of Navy League; and selection to Secretary of Navy National Naval Reserve Policy Board. Bob is survived by his wife of 23 years, Marty Tate of Bellevue, WA; their six children: Susan Bentley, Chicago, Ill.; Terry and Tad Patterson, Spokane, WA; Pam and Scott Saunders, Atlanta, Georgia; Pete and Connie Holton, Bellevue, WA; Steve and Reisha Holton, Sammamish, WA; Dan Holton, Los Angeles, CA.; and 10 grandchildren. He is survived by two sisters: Betty Hart and Margaret Anderson, Portland, OR; one niece, five nephews and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Clair Brown; and one nephew. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, June 28th, at 3:00 p.m., at the Don James Center, University of Washington Husky Stadium, 3800 Montlake Blvd. NE, Seattle, WA 98195.
