Roger Jones Obituary

Roger Wesley JONES, Jr. 5/16/44 to 12/27/05 Roger (Wes) passed away peacefully at Harborview Med Center, surrounded by loving family members, his wife, Linda Penitsch Jones, daughters, Jenni Jones, Teri Ashbaugh, and Julie Teske, father, Roger W. Jones, Sr., sisters Stephanie Jones and Debbie Vitulli, and brother-in-law Joe Vitulli at his side. Two weeks ago, a few hours after a special evening decorating the Christmas tree with his wife and two daughters, Roger collapsed from a brain aneurysm and cardiac arrest, and never regained consciousness. First and foremost, Roger was devoted to his family. Roger lost his wife, Bettylou, to cancer at age 42, and five years later married Linda in 1997. He loved being at home with Linda and Jenni. Roger shared his love for music and concerts with them, and enjoyed dancing with family and friends. He had a love for beauty in art and nature and was himself a talented artist, creating many stained-glass pieces over the years, his masterpiece an 8 foot tall stained-glass window of a peacock, which he proudly unveiled to friends and family after it was installed in his home in 2000. He also built a lovely koi pond in the backyard, just beyond the deck and benches he made. Roger was a romantic at heart, writing poetry with perfect iambic pentameter to his wife and children. Roger and Linda shared enthusiasm for cruises traveling to Venice, their favorite city, other parts of Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Scandinavia, and Russia. Together they enjoyed remodeling homes (Medina and Rancho Mirage). He was an avid collector of Christmas houses, ornaments, and nutcrackers, movies, books, contemporary art, and was also a lover of dogs. Roger was born in Seattle to parents Roger and Jeanne Jones, and was the great grandson of U. S. Senator, Wesley L. Jones (R-WA). He attended McGilvra Elementary, graduated from Lakeside, and received a B.A. in Russian Studies from Princeton University, where he belonged to the Ivy Eating Club and Golf Team. He joined the U.S. Navy and completed service as a Lieutenant. Subsequently, he received his J.D. from the U of W Law School, joined the firm of Sax and MacIver, became a partner, and later established a solo practice, specializing in real estate and estate planning. A member of the University Club, Seattle Golf Club, and Marrakesh Country Club, he also served on the Board of Directors of Lake Union Drydock. Besides those at his bedside, he is survived by cousins Bruce, Missy, and David Jones; uncle Bruce Jones, Sr. (wife Grace), son-in-law Pat Teske, and precious grandchildren Wyatt and Olivia Teske. He was a caring uncle to his niece, Christina Jones, and nephews, Josh and Markus Vitulli. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, December 31st at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, corner of 84th N.E. and N.E. 12th, Medina, followed by a reception. At the family's request, remembrances, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Union Gospel Mission, or Harborview Trauma ICU. The family wishes to thank the Harborview TICU staff for the outstanding care and comfort provided to Roger and his family.

Dear Julie, Teri, Jenni and Linda

Thinking of Wes always brings a smile to my face. He had a dry wit and would look hard to see if I believed what he just told me. Whenever I saw him, he had a kind word and easy smile. He shall be greatly missed. Prayers from Montana continue for you all during these hardest of times.

Dear Linda and Family: I met Roger many years ago when he organized, and ran, the G.R.O.S.S. cup athletic event. I knew from the first time we met that he was a gentle soul and had very good athletic skills. He made friends easily and all of us marveled at his organizing skills. Later, I saw Roger downtown for coffee and we really enjoyed talking about the past. He will be missed and my prayers and thoughts are with you and the family during this tragic time.
