Sally Parks Obituary

Sally Parks

Sally Parks died of heart failure at her home in Seattle on February 21, 2018. She was born February 9, 1936, in Portland, OR, daughter of Ethel and Jack Litzer of Camas, WA. She graduated from Camas High School in 1954 and Mills College in 1958 with a degree in music. After a year in New York on a Woodrow Wilson fellowship, she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching at Harvard where she met her future husband, Richard Parks. They were married July 2, 1960, in Vancouver, WA. After a year in Palo Alto, CA, the couple spent four years in Berkeley where Richard earned a Ph.D. in economics, Sally taught music in the Richmond schools, and their daughter, Sasha, was born.

The family moved to Chicago in 1965 where Richard was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, their son Joshua was born, and Sally made a career change, earning a Master of Social Work. In 1970 Richard was appointed to a faculty position at the University of Washington and the family moved to Seattle. They bought a lovely house on Queen Anne that was their home for 43 years.

Sally worked as a social worker in hospital and school settings, then began training with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, including a year at the C.G. Jung Institute in San Francisco. She received her diploma in 1980 and built a successful psychoanalytic practice that continued until she retired in 2007.

Sally loved cooking, playing the piano, traveling, and singing in the Skyline Chorale. At their Camano Island beach house, she loved gardening and reading by the fire, particularly on stormy winter days. She doted on her little Yorkie, Gus. And most of all, she loved spending time with friends and family.

Sally is survived by her husband; daughter, Sasha; son, Joshua; former daughter-in-law, Julie Fay; two grandchildren, Josephine and Nolan; brother, Anthony Litzer, and his wife, Toni, of Portland, OR; and cousin, Julie Anderson of Watsonville, CA.

There will be a memorial mass at St. James Cathedral on

May 19, 2018, at 10:30 am, with a reception at Skyline in Seattle to follow.

I´m sorry for your loss. I knew Sally when she was young in Camas. Her family was our neighbor. She played the piano at my birthday party in the 40´s or 50´s

In the 1980s, Sally compassionately, fiercely, and courageously gave of herself that I and my training cohort could finish our post graduate analytic training program in an often contentious organizational climate. Ill always be deeply grateful for her advocacy and decency in taking on a thankless, unremunerated role to assure there would be quality future generations of depth psychtherapy craft in the Pacific Northwest.

May your Spirit be at rest and at peace, Sally.

With Deep Gratitude,

My heart felt condolences to Dick and their children. I met Sally on various social occasions -- gatherings at our colleagues and friends' homes- during 1990s and early 2000s. She always struck me as wise, worldly, and very engaging-- just a lovely lady. May she rest in eternal peace.

Dear Dick: So sorry to hear about Sally's passing. I remember her best from the 1980s-she was so vital, intellectually curious about life, good fun to be with and a beautiful piano player. My condolences to you and your family. John Allan, Pender Island, BC
