Stuart Moldrem Obituary

Stuart Karl Moldrem

Stu, age 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday October 20, 2015 in Ivins Utah. He was born in Centralia, Washington on October 6, 1925 to Olga and Karl Moldrem and raised in Bellingham, Washington.

He knew early that art was his calling. His art schooling began as a child under college faculty at Western Washington College. His art studies continued in Los Angeles, Seattle and Japan.

His talents were endless. Stu was listed in Who's Who in American Art. He was the army artist for the Stars and Stripes in Tokyo and went on USO tours during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He started the Atelier of Art in Seattle and was an award winning artist for his sports and drama features at the Seattle P-I.

His love of sports had him highly involved with pro and college sports teams in Seattle. The University of Washington honored Stu for 50 years of drawings of athletes with the Don Palmer Award. He was an honorary member at the Seattle Tennis Club and enjoyed his tennis and golf with his wife Alice, at their home in Rancho Mirage, CA.

Stu is survived by his wife Alice, daughter Lisa, son Karl (Carolyn), step daughters Penny (Carl), Lynn (George), Kris and grandchildren David, Daniel, Carly, Adam, Luke, Lindsay, Shane and Julia. A special thank you to the St George Hospice and Southern Utah Veterans Home staff for their wonderful care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NW Parkinson's Foundation. www.nwpf.org.

I was fortunate to study art and portrait painting with Stuart Moldrem in Seattle, Washington in 1985 and 1986. He was a man of great talent, brilliance and humanity. Oh, the stories he told me, they enrich my life, even, today. He knew so many people in the art world and shared their struggles, successes and subsequent perceptive life tips. He was a student of the great artist Theodore Lukits of Los Angeles, whom I studied with later on his recommendation. We were blessed to have had Stuart in our lives, for sure.

We were so sorry to read of Stu's passing. My uncle Gordon Tweit was just beside himself. We are distant relatives. As I understand it my great grandmother was Josephine Moldrem Peterson. My grandmother was Alice Peterson Tweit. I'll have to ask Gordy again just how we are related.

Of course we loved his work & Gordy has copies of several of his news clippings & accomplishments. We send our condolences. I life well lived, he will not be forgotten.

With love & hugs,

I remember Stu as an artist of high school athletic players in football, etc. The pictures were drawn from the actual pictures of the players, some from my high school of Lincoln in Seattle. Great pictures that depicted some of the outstanding players on our team as well as others on Seattle teams.

Stu was a great guy and artist. This world will miss him but I hope to see him in the next.
Lots of love,

Jerry Ramey (Lincoln H.S. 1951)
