Stuart Smailes Obituary

Stuart SMAILES STUART SMAILES passed away unexpectedly on October 23, 2002. Stu was born in Spokane but he was thrilled when his parents moved to Seattle early in his childhood. He graduated from Lincoln High School, served in the U.S. Navy and upon discharge, began working at SAFECO in 1956 as a systems machine operator. He soon applied his exceptional talent in the area of policy creation, statistical systems and claims processing. He retired after 32 years at SAFECO in June 1989. Stu will be remembered most as a patron of the arts. His abiding interest was theater and Broadway musicals were his passion. Stu was a kind, generous man who cheerfully volunteered at the Paramount, 5th Avenue, Seattle Repertory Theaters and many other arts organizations, as well as the Seattle Zoological Society. In addition to donating thousands of hours as a volunteer and as a Seattle theater historian, he gave generous financial support to many organizations and causes. Those who knew this eccentric and lovable man will miss him greatly. He leaves behind too many friends to mention who will miss his quick wit and unique sense of humor. Please honor Stu's memory by supporting the arts, or taking friends to see a play, a musical or a Seattle Men's Chorus concert. Stu would thank you for sustaining the arts. Arrangements provided by Bonney-Watson, Capitol Hill. An informal gathering of friends will take place at a later date.
