Theodore Norman "Ted" Hvatum

Theodore Hvatum Obituary

Theodore (Ted) Norman HVATUM Was born on April 8, 1928, the son of Norwegian immigrants Olaf and Aagot Hvatum, in Seattle, WA. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1946. He attended the University of Washington majoring in Business. He married Shirley Gravrock in February of 1950. They had three children, Kristian (Kris), Holly, and Joy. They started their married life in Ballard, later moving to Maltby, WA. After the family was grown, Ted moved back to Ballard, which he considered home. Ted served 8 years in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War. Part of that time was spent on a Buoy Tender stationed in Honolulu Hawaii. He had an opportunity to see many of the islands of the South Pacific at this time, and developed some lasting friendships. He began working at Seattle Ship Supply when he was 16, and came back after his time in the service to be the accountant until he retired in 1989. Ted enjoyed working with the fishing community throughout his career at Fisherman's Dock. Besides his work, he enjoyed skiing, horseback riding, woodworking, and sailing. He built two homes and three sailboats in his lifetime, and he enjoyed sharing them with family and friends. Sailing was his passion, and he often dreamed of sailing around the world to his families chagrin. Ted died August 30, 2003 and he leaves a son, Kris (Melissa) Hvatum and a daughter Joy (Russell) Trombley; six grandchildren Taryn, Tanner, Teddie, Quintessa, Kassidy and Thor; sister Catherine (Bruce) Healy; and seven nieces and one nephew. Graveside services will be Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at 1 p.m. and will be conducted at Washelli Cemetery, 11111 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle, with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions are suggested to Seattle Fisherman's Memorial, P.O Box 17356, Seattle, WA., 98127. Arrangements by Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home.
