William MacDonald Obituary

William James MacDONALD, Jr. Dr. Bill MacDonald, loving husband, wonderful father, devoted friend, and charismatic leader died Thursday, February 19, 2004 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 1, 1945 to William and Estelle MacDonald, Bill attended Brown University and did his medical training at the University of Vermont, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of California, San Diego. He joined the Everett Clinic in 1976 as a cardiologist and has served as president and Board Chair since 1996. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Strategic Planning Board of Providence Health Systems and is a Board Director for First Choice Health Network. He met, fell in love with, and married Karen Knight on April 6, 1968. They shared thirty five beautiful years together as parents, best friends, and soul mates, complimenting each other in every way possible. Affectionately called "Dude" by his three children, Meredith, Katie, and Billy, he was a friend, advisor, pillar of support, and the source of much laughter and wisdom. His grandchildren, Daisy Kai and Blue William, will never forget the camping trips they shared with him or his colorful stories. Bill was incredibly intelligent, insatiately curious, and an incredible athlete and outdoor enthusiast. He loved to learn and read thousands of books, sometimes even five or six at a time. Some people know a little about everything, or a lot about one thing - Dude knew a lot about just about everything. He was an avid hiker and fly fisherman but particularly loved the cross country navigation sport of Orienteering. Known as "Mac" on the O-circuit, Bill traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada to run and was known for his competitive spirit and friendly, easy going, nature. Though he left this world much too soon, his vivacious spirit lives on in those that knew and loved him. When fair fall winds rattle golden leaves; in the hollow footprints of winter raindrops; on the breath of unopened spring blossoms; where the color fades from a summer sunset; there we find you - there you are. We love you Dude! We miss you! A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 1:00 pm at St Mary Magdalen Parish, 8717 7th Ave., Everett. In lieu of flowers donations to Everett Clinic Foundation, Dr. MacDonald Memorial,, ATTN: Jennifer Blake, 3901 Hoyt Ave., Everett, WA 98201. Arrangements under the direction of Purdy and Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home, Everett, WA

As a friend of Estelle and Lisa, I had the opportunity of meeting Bill and his lovely family only once, on a smmer morning, in Estelle's kitchen. I was immediately impressed with the love and closeness exhibited by this family. I'm terribly saddened to learn of his sudden, untimely passing.
