Dorothy Sobaski Obituary

Dorothy Irene Sobaski, age 79, of Sedalia, died Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center.

She was born July 12, 1930, in Sedgewick, CO, the daughter of Cecil and Dorothy (Toops) Calvert. On March 29, 1948, in Fort Madison, IA, she married Leo Sobaski, who died August 14, 1997.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. After her children were grown, she worked at Inter-State Studio for a number of years. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports. She loved flowers and had a knack for raising beautiful gardens.

Surviving are her children, Dwight Sobaski, of Sedalia, David Sobaski, and his wife, Rochelle, of Nixa, MO, Carroll Knipp, of Sedalia, Bonnie Sobaski, of Excelsior Springs, MO, Tom Sobaski, and his wife, Kelly, of Sedalia, Nancy Wilson, of Sedalia, Rachel Samson, and her husband, Kenny, of Marshall, MO, and Steve Sobaski, and his wife, Julie, of Sedalia; a brother, Ron Calvert, and his wife, Virginia, of Donnellson, IA; Sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley Calvert, of Hamilton, IL, Bernard Sobaski, and his wife, Betty, of Iowa City, IA, Josita Witte, and her husband, Bob, of Davenport, IA, Mary Theresa Horras, and her husband, Dennis, of Fairfield, IA, Henry Sobaski, and his wife, Beverly, of Davenport, IA, and Joan Keane, and her husband, Bob, of Omaha, NE; 14 grandchildren, Kristina, Joe, Gena, Eric, Kim, Lori, Bryan, Nick, Matt, Mitch, Derick, Kenny, Olivia and Claire; eight great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, George Calvert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010, at St. Patrick's Church in Sedalia with the Rev. Fr. Bill Miller officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Matt Sobaski, Joe Sobaski, Mitch Sobaski, Eric Sobaski, Derick Samson and Alex Knipp. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

The Rosary will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010 at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel with visitation to follow until 8 p.m.

My deepest sympathy to the Sobaski family. Mrs. Sobaski was a great lady and I have wonderful memories of her kindness. I can remember the flower beds she kept - how beautiful they were.
