Casper Hayes Obituary
Casper W. "Mickey" Hayes, Jr., 88, died September 19, 2021 in Shelbyville, KY. He was born July 15, 1933 in Shelbyville, KY to Casper Williams Hayes, Sr., DDS and Sarah Elizabeth McCormack Hayes. He attended University of Kentucky one year. He was an Army veteran drafted during the Korean War in 1953 and honorably discharged June 1955. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. His occupation was thoroughbred horse breeder of Hayesland Farm in Shelbyville from 1960-1980's where he was raised. His family legacy was saddlebred CHESTER DARE No. 10, owned by his grandfather, Edward Ware McCormack and his brother-in-law, J.H. Fullenwider. Chester Dare was a prolific sire, establishing an important line of the American Saddlebred. Forty-three of the 50 top sires in American Saddlebred Horse Association's list trace to Chester Dare. He lived on Chester Dare Farm, Waddy, KY. Chester Dare died in 1904and was buried at E.W. McCormack farm in Waddy, KY. Chester Dare's gravestone was moved to American Saddlebred Museum at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY in 2000. Mickey was also landlord for Jacobi Sales in Shelbyville, having developed the land in the 1960's for businesses there. Mickey never met a stranger, especially if they were a U of L Cardinal fan. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and having pet dogs from childhood throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by Ann Cottongim Hayes of Shelbyville, KY, the mother of his two children,Susan Hayes Crecelius (Paul) and Mary Hayes Smith (Bryan), both of Simpsonville; a niece,Leigh Ann Cottongim Barcellona (Rich) of Shelbyville; one brother, Edward Boswell Hayes, DMD of Shelbyville; and grandchildren, Tanner Jacob Smith (Madison) of Ballwin, MO, Lindsay McCormack Smith of Columbus, OH, and Nikolas, Ryan and Trace Barcellona of Shelbyville; and his nieces, Ann "Annie" Rutledge Hayes Ronald (Peter) of Louisville, KY, Sarah "Bookie" Elizabeth Hayes Wilson (Judge) ofVersailles, KY, and Katherine "Nene" Bryant Hayes Trentham (Mattison) of Anchorage, KY;and cousins. He is also survived by his companion of 27 years, Carol Furrow and her children, Mark Furrow, Kathleen Lanpher, and Laura Baer (Daryl), and Carol's grandchildren, Alec Furrow (Taylor), Austin Baer, and Noah Furrow; and his beloved dog Molly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Casper Williams Hayes, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth McCormack Hayes, and sister-in-law, Shirley Ann Bryant Hayes.
Visitation will be September 27, 2021 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Shannon Funeral Home. At the family's request, masks are required at the funeral home. Following the memorial service, his cremated remains will be buried following the Grove Hill Cemetery in a section of cemetery that was originally part of the family farm.
