Marshall Phillips Obituary

SHELBYVILLE - Reverend Marshall E. Phillips, 89, of Shelbyville, died on Tuesday, the 29th day of May, 2018, at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville. Born in Graefenburg, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Mose and Addie Smith Phillips. A graduate of Simpsonville High School, he earned an associate's degree from Cumberland College. He then graduated from Georgetown College, ultimately earning his master's degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. He was a minister and pastor, having served the congregations of the Pruden First Baptist Church in Pruden, Tennessee, the Highland Baptist Church in Shelbyville, the Woodland Baptist Church in Middletown, the Clayvillage Baptist Church in Clayvillage, and the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Franklin County. The former director of the Cedarmore Baptist Camp in Shelby County, and of the Jonathan Creek Baptist Camp in Hardin, Kentucky, he also formerly worked as the director of camps and assemblies for the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Later he worked as the orientation director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention mission partnerships in Kenya and Brazil. For over thirteen years, he worked on the mission field in Kenya and Tanzania. Through the East African Seminary, he trained pastors and he and his wife taught classes in Nairobi in general subjects and home economics topics. Always ready to follow the Lord's directions, he served as interim pastor in numerous churches throughout his lifetime. A published author, he wrote He Leadeth Me, which chronicles much of his life's work. Running his beagle hounds was one of his enjoyable pastimes.

His survivors include his wife of nearly sixty-eight years, Dorsie Phillips of Shelbyville; his daughters, Sandy Roberts Dunn and her husband, Greg, of Cave City, and Pam Tirey of Energy, Illinois; his son, Todd Phillips and his wife, Peggie, of Frankfort; his sister, Ruth Morford of Omaha, Nebraska; his grandchildren, Stephanie Roberts Ulmer and her husband, Drew, Matt Roberts, Tyler Roberts, Joshua Tirey, Christina Abbott and her husband, Joe, Ashley Thompson, and Betsy Phillips; and his great-grandchildren, Amelia Ulmer, Maddox Ulmer, and Molly Claire Ulmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Paul Tirey.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, the 2ndday of June, 2018, at the Highland Baptist Church of Shelbyville with Reverend Jerry Anderson officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M., until 8:00 P.M., Friday, 1 June 2018, at the Highland Baptist Church, and expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Burks Branch Baptist Church Missions Fund, 2023 Fox Run Road, Shelbyville, Kentucky 40065. A fine, caring minister who gave our family his Dog, Mitzi , in 1976. We loved and cared for Mitzi for 12 years. Always a special place in our heart for his gift to us when we moved to KY.
