James Ater Obituary

James Richard 'Dick' Ater
Feb. 19, 1945 – Nov. 11, 2025

James Richard "Dick" Ater, age 80, of Sallisaw, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, in Roland. He was born on Feb. 19, 1945, in Decatur, Ill., to the late Emma Mae (Clements) Ater and Leland James Ater.
Dick's life was marked by his deep love for family and a passion for horse racing. He married Marilyn (Kaltenbach) Ater on April 4, 1965, in Decatur, and together they built a loving home. Dick dedicated over 31 years of his career to the Caterpillar Tractor Company, retiring on April 1, 1995. After retiring, he embraced his love for horses, becoming a full-time trainer and owner of American Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds, racing at venues such as Blue Ribbon Downs, Remington Park, and Will Rogers Downs. His love for horses began at the age of 12, and he started training them at the age of 19.
Dick also attended Blue Ribbon Fellowship, where he cherished the camaraderie of his community.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Marilyn, of their home; daughter, Jackie Nash and Brad of Gans; grandson, Bailey Nash and Cheyenne of Gans; and great-grandson, Stetsyn Gene Nash. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Trolia and Marty of Leesburg, Fla.; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends who will deeply miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Mike Ater.
Services for Dick Ater will be held at a later date in Illinois, with cremation arrangements directed by Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.
