As we approach Yom Kippur this year (2019 - 10 years after his passing), I was brought right back to the darkest moments of my life. As a young woman living in the Inner Richmond District, I attended services one year and heard Rabbi Lew speak on Yom Kippur (1998). Rabbi Lew's words moved me deeply and though I do not recall the details of his sermon, I still remember a strong feeling that he was speaking directly to ME; he spoke of pain and moving beyond it and I truly believed that he could see me, all the way in the back row. I felt understood in a way that I desperately needed all those years ago. To Rabbi Lew's family, I just wanted to share that his warmth and presence that day quite literally saved me.

To Rabbi Lews family,
I am devastated to hear of the Rabbis passing.
I am a very devout orthodox woman who went through a very difficult divorce 10 years ago and I happened to come across Rabbi Lews book.
I always wanted to go to San Francisco to meet this man with such extraordinary integrity, who shared his journey in life.
This year my friend requested that I help her write a speech about her late father Yaakov Yisrael. I remembered the original thoughts of Rabbi Lew , about Jacob struggling with the angel, from 10 years ago. I tried to find the book on the internet when I heard about his passing.
I lived in Australia then and was inspired by his words. I am now in Israel and his beautiful thoughts will always accompany me.
What a loss that I never met him and what a loss for his family, community and friends.
How precious time is...the light from his neshama will radiate always.
With sympathy,

I am devastated by Alan's unexpected death. What a remarkable, spiritual person he was. He was also caring. He gave of himself to all who needed him.

When my husband died, he gave us comfort at a time when we had great difficulty coping. He was ther e for us in a warm and loving manner.

He was also in the community supporting men and women who turned to him for understanding.
He had rare empathy.

May his name be inscribed for blessing.
