You opened my eyes to injustice. Your classes not only allowed me to hear my voice but also the voices of those without. Your legacy continues. Rest in power.

Dear Huerta Family, Reminising through our highschool website, I was saddened to learn of Al's death. So many of us had great fun with Al during our highschool years. It seems his life here was short, but now he is at home with the Lord. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Raymond,
I want to extend my condolences to you and your family. I remember as if it was yesterday taking you and Albert to your new 5th grade class at Dover Elementary School. Over the years our paths separated but I never forgot about you and Albert. You were two of the really nice people in the world. I know as a twin it is extra hard to lose part of you.

Albert was a sweet, sweet man. I am shocked that he died so suddenly (at least for me). It cannot be true.

Al,
The words I write can’t convey the sorrow I feel. My heart and prayers go out to your family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known you. You will be greatly missed but not forgotten. As my mentor and friend of 19 years I’ll treasure our time together. Coffee, breakfast, burgers and fries with a pint, precious moments that ultimately changed me into a better man.

Dear Al,
I will miss you and forever carry you in my heart. You were one of my "big" brothers who gave me love and wonderful things when I was a little girl. When I became an adult, you shared music, friends, took me places, and even asked me to photograph a Nobel Prize Laureate at Berkeley. I will never forget the times we shared; the laughter you brought to me and many, and the accomplishments you accomplished. I still have that Timex watch you and Ray gave me as a young girl. I will always love you, dear Al.

Fr Albert Huerta was one of my first teachers in high school (1968), and I was fortunate to develop a friendship with him from that time. Every time I write a letter in Spanish to friends or customers, I recall it was he who started and developed in me, even then, such a strong language ability that I use every day. He was a great teacher and a great scholar, as everyone knows, one blessed with boundless energy. Through many years, Albert maintained contact with me and gave me excellent insight and advice on many life decisions --- as was the same for everyone else who knew him. Yet fundamentally, despite extraordinary intellectual talents, he was extremely modest and accessible to anyone he met. As you know, you didnt have to meet Albert, he would make sure to go out to you and meet you.
I am shocked and feel an emptiness that I cannot describe inside me at your passing, Albert, and I know so do so many others. I am still numb, and I wish I had known of your sudden final illness and passing, howsoever you would not have made "a big deal", as you would say, of it.
For all of his acquaintances and friends who read this, I share with you all the bitter emptiness of loss even as we recall his warmth and smile. In te speravi, Domine.

My sincerest condolences to the Huerta Family. I met Alberto in 1989 while a student at USF. Al became a close friend and mentor. He was instrumental in my receiving numerous academic scholarships during my years as a student. Alberto was a part of my family. In 1992, he married my wife, Mariana and me. Alberto spent several Thanksgiving holidays with me and my extended family. He baptized both of my daughters, Ysabella and Giselle and presided over the burial of my wife's grandmother. I will miss his wonderful laugh and youthful exuberance. Alberto was always there for me during good times and bad. I cannot convey in words how much he enriched my life and those of my family. I feel lucky to have shared so many memorable experiences with him. I feel honored to have called him my friend. My thoughts and prayers will be with the Huerta family.

I only had Professor Huerta last semester for Poetry in San Francisco. He was an amazing teacher that loved telling his students about all of the influential and great artists he met and formed relationships with. I am extremely sad to see him go, but I will always be appreciative of the way that he has opened my eyes to the unique wonder of Bay Area art. May he rest in peace.

Padre, Thank you for the many sage advice you have given me over the years. My family and I are deeply sadden by your quick departure from this earthly place. You will be missed! You have embedded an everlasting impression on me and you have been a great influence in my life. Without your guidance, I would not be where I'm at today. I'm looking forward to the day we meet again! I have many topics to discuss with you.

I am so sorry to hear that Father Huerta has passed. I met Father Huerta in 1989 when I entered the University of San Francisco. During that time he became my mentor and friend. His fine examples of literature lit my passion for reading and writing. He was always so proud of my achievements both intellectually and spiritually. He watched my son grow up to become a man and was elated when he received his BA from Dartmouth. We shared a lot of our personal experiences together over lunch, usually in North Beach, one of his favorite places to hang out. In 2003 he read my father his last rights and two days later delivered his eulogy. My wife, son and I will truly miss him. He was such an inspiration to me and taught me volumes about life. He left an indelible mark on me which will forever be a part of me. To Father Alberto Huerta may God bless you and thank you for being my mentor and friend.

I have known Father Huerta through his long support of the Gleeson Library. Recently, he asked several friends, at coffee in the Student Union, about the role of a priest, and answered his own question with, "to show the way to heaven." Eleanor Dickinson's line drawing of Father as the model for her Ignatius captures him so well, especially the outstretched hands.

Alberto, you brought me so gently and easily to the door of deep presence and connection with Spirit. This connection has been the most precious gift my life. You became one of my greatest friends, and you taught me about friendship, about loving, and about celebrating the poetry of life and the richness of being human. The gratitude feels endless and bottomless for the many gifts and support through the years you gave to me and to so many others. I am so treasuring the memories of so many deeply special times and moments. Thank you Alberto for being that brilliant light of eternally youthful joy and living an authentic life that was truly your own. All my love and gratitude,

It was very sad to hear that another member of our family has passed. Father Al was my mother's cousin. My memories include his special prayers at our Family Reunions, the beautiful memories that he shared at my great grandmother's funeral, and the wonderful poem which he wrote in honor of the passing of my father. My love to Uncle Al, cousin Raymond and the rest of the family.

We were cousins and as children livcd next door to each other. We grew up in Fairfield during the 40s & 50s (Pop. about 5,000), and along with Albert's twin brother Raymond, we 3 played and fought like brothers. We shared many special moments together, such as, going to the movies (both American & Mexican) ,enjoying the 4th of July celebrations held in Suisun City, and breaking a Pinata at the Fire dept's Christmas Party in the old Armijo auditorium. A part of my past is now gone. But the memories of the times we share will always live-on. Farewell Cousin. J

Albert. You left us? I always thought I'd see you again. Our Bible discussion started in 1955 was barely started. The nights at Point Richmond at Le Menage with all of us together in eleventh grade. I'm so sorry you're gone. But I loved you then, love you now, and I know I'm not alone. Gary Bookout

I am very sorry to hear of Father Huerta's loss. I was privileged to have taken many of Fr. Huerta's classes. We discovered we had a common thread (being both from Fairfield at the University of San Francisco). He was always enthusiastic to talk to students outside of the classroom and was gracious enough to have written several letters of recommendation on my behalf so that I could receive scholarships. He was a popular professor and will be greatly missed.
