Alice Borchardt Obituary

Alice Allen O'Brien Borchardt Born October 6, 1939 and raised in New Orleans, LA, died on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 in Houston, TX. She was the beloved wife of Clifford Borchardt for 38 years; daughter of the late Howard and Katherine O'Brien. Survived by her sisters Anne O'Brien Rice, Rancho Mirage, CA; Tamara O'Brien Tinker, Daly City, CA; Karen O'Brien, Dallas, TX and Micki O'Brien Jenkins, Dallas, TX. Also survived by nephews, Christopher T. Rice, Los Angeles, CA and Daniel Tinker, Oakland, CA. She lived for many years in Houston, TX and was a licensed vocational nurse. She fulfilled her dream of becoming a successful novelist with the publication of her first novel Devoted. It was published in 1995. She was also the author of six other books including The Silver Wolf and The Raven Warrior. Alice was, from an early childhood, a voracious reader. Largely self-educated, she took great pleasure in the historical background and details of her novels. She loved to write battle scenes. Her hobbies included raising orchids and she loved her pet cats. A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, August 4, 2007 in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive, Houston, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Eternal rest grant unto them, 0 Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Geo. H. Lewis & Sons Houston (713) 789-3005

I worked with Alice for many years, transcribing her handwritten notebooks into her absolutely fantastic books! While her handwriting was, at times, very hard to read, the storytelling always swept me into the lives of the characters. Even when talking about things in our lives, Alice was a born storyteller. She will be greatly missed.

I met Alice almost ten years ago at a literacy event near Houston. I found her to be a beautiful, intelligent and creative spirit. I have her books here on my "keeper" shelf. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I knew Alice during the short time that she lived in Richardson as a young woman. She was fun to talk to as we hung out at Rubaiyat coffee house and at slumber parties. I admired her for following her muse and writing books.
