Allan Levy Obituary

Allan M. Levy Died on Thursday, February 16, 2006 after a five-month battle with throat cancer. He was 60 years old. He died at home and in peace, in the company of family and friends. Allan was born and raised in Memphis, TN, and embodied all of the lovely qualities we Northerners associate with Southerners: he was kind and gracious, inclusive, an attentive host (no one ever left Pam and Allan's house underfed or thirsty), and an avid storyteller. Allan was a creator of community. He had a small army of friends of all ages, sizes, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds from every conceivable corner of the globe. The man never met a stranger. An introduction to Allan was an entrée to an eclectic gang of warm, talented, and truly interesting folk. Allan had a passion for things Italian: he spoke the language, loved the land, and possessed a truly Roman appreciation for things of beauty. He also had an eye for quality of form and function, which clearly informed his work as an architect: he was an able and imaginative craftsman and designed some very cool stuff (including having his hand in the design of the new S.F. International Airport). Allan liked music of all sorts but especially blues and rock and roll. He had definite opinions. About everything. He gave quietly and generously of his time and energy to non-profit organizations like Kids Turn and the Rally Project. He was exceptionally nice to children and animals (including his beloved dog, Maggie). In August 1994, Allan married Pam, the love of his life (and he the love of hers) in a sweet, simple ceremony made most remarkable by the fact that Allan danced in public. He brought Pam immense joy. Allan will undoubtedly be remembered for a wealth of wonderful attributes and deeds, but perhaps he will be remembered most commonly for his good, warm heart, his ever-present hat, and the immense love and loyalty he inspired in those who knew him. Allan is survived by his wife, Pam; mother, Mrs. Emily Davis; sister, Diane and brother-in-law, Arnold Eger; brother, Donald and sister-in-law, Shelley Levy; brother, Steven and sister-in-law, Betsy Olim; sister-in-law, Kate DiGiacomo; six nieces and nephews, a whole bunch of cousins, the above-mentioned army of friends, and last, but not least, his dog Maggie. A Memorial Service is being planned for Thurs, April 6, 2006, 3pm, at the Officer's Club at the SF Presidio. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to Kids' Turn, Rally Family Visitation Services, UCSF Palliative Care Group, and The Women's Community Clinic.

Pam: Allan was one of those rare individuals who comes into ones life and leaves an indelible mark. I know he did in mine. As Joseph Campbell put it, Allan followed his bliss, and we who knew him are the better for it. I will miss him and my thougts and prayers are with you at this time.

Pam, I represented Allan in a matter here in Nevada and he was our architect on two remodeling projects in San Francisco. What are we going to do without him? He was the consummate professional with the eye of an artist and knowledge to make his/our vision a reality. My husband and I think of him often when we are enjoying our beautiful condo in SF. Pam, as you know he was a first-class guy and we will miss him everytime we walk down Union Street. Our Best, Tom & Linda Johnson

The breadth of Allan's warmth and wisdom was bi-coastal, reaching our family in Montclair, NJ. To employ a favorite phrase we first heard from Allan, "the ocean we swim in" feels much emptier with his passing.

Pam, What is wonderful other being is the couple that you and Allan created. That relationship and all that it meant to those who knew you, to all the lives that you and he touched, lives on. Thinking of you,

It is not easy to summarize the experience of working for and with Allan for over seven years. As a matter of fact it is impossible. One of his many best friends put it best: Allan is very much among us, and in so many different ways. A true guiding light.

When in doubt, we can all ask ourselves 'What would Allan say or do'. And the right answer will magically appear.

So long, boss. You are the best.

Pam, I'm so sorry about your loss. Getting the love we need leaves us so vulnerable, but there's no real choice to be made on that score. Nobody would turn down having what you've had, in order to avoid this inevitable grief. All of us who know you have been thinking of you and Allan, sharing amongst ourselves the depth of our concern and regard for both of you.

Dear Allan,

I know you are in heaven designing God's Italian Villa. God bless you, my firend and colleague. Thank you for all our travels together. From organizing at the Environmental Workshop in 1968 with Andy and Kitsie, Curtis and Susan, Jim and Sally and others, to rock concerts and laughter. We were blessed to reconnect with you in 1990 and having you design for my new wife and I one of the most beautiful places in San Francisco. Your love and energy and creativity are always with us.

Love,

Michael and Juli

Allan will be missed by so many. I can see him now walking down Union Street, always in a hat, intently discussing something with whomever he was with. Always a warm smile and a hello. He was an architect who cared about those he designed homes and spaces for and his work enriches our lives and through it he lives on.

The world is clearly a better place for having had Allan in it. For those us who were lucky enough to know him and call him friend or relative, he enriched our lives by the simple act of spending time with him (and Pam). There are many tragedies in his passing, but the one I will feel the most is not getting another chance just to spend time with him. Rest in peace, Allan, and feel free to dance all you want!

We were blessed to have Allan as a "best friend". There are many that consider Allan "their" best friend--which is a tribute to Allan's ability to value all of his friends and make them each feel special. Allan enriched our lives - and although we know he is still with us -- we miss him!
