Professor Alma Jean Maxwell

1930 - 2016

Professor Alma Jean Banks Maxwell transitioned from this life peacefully on Easter, March 27, 2016. She faced her challenges with unparalleled courage and an unflagging sense of humor. Alma Jean Banks Maxwell, was born October 21, 1930 in Little Rock Arkansas. As a very young girl, working with her mother, Helen, in the household of the Attorney General of Arkansas, she learned good work ethics which she used throughout her life. Alma excelled as a student and at the age of 16 graduated with honors from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Little Rock Arkansas. For the rest of her life she remained faithfully attached to the spirit and mission of her beloved alma mater. She was a faithful member of the East Bay Chapter of the National Dunbar Alumni Association, Inc., and held various elected offices throughout the Association. She was a graduate of San Francisco State University and later became a Professor there in the Black Studies Department. Alma leaves to celebrate her life and legacy her son, Michael Virgil and a host of devoted friends and former students who assure that her commitment to critical thinking and learning and to experiencing the best that life has to offer will be continued. Alma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert Maxwell.
A Memorial Service for Professor Alma Maxwell will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016 1:00-3:00 PM at The Columbarium 1 Loraine Court off Anza between Stanyan and Arguello. Please RSVP by May 1, 2016 415/282-7662 or 510/862-2277
