Andrew P. Wallace Obituary

Everyone who knew Andrew P. Wallace talked about his upbeat attitude, his love for his family and his passion for teaching. "If there would ever be a poster that needed to depict a soldier, Sgt. Wallace's photo would be on it," said Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls. "His attitude, personality and constant smile were reminders of how much he loved life and doing what he was doing." Wallace, 25, of Oshkosh, Wis., was killed Sept. 26 by a roadside bomb in Shaibah. He was assigned to Fond du Lac. Wallace, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, was a teacher at Emmeline Cook Elementary School and a physical education teacher and coach at Oshkosh North High School. "He was never in a bad mood and always smiling and had positive things to say," said Gary Westerman, a former wrestling coach. "He was an all-around great guy and a great friend." Wallace kept in contact with school staff via a Web site and posted photos so the kids could see war. When he was preparing to leave overseas, students at Emmeline placed their footprints on a banner that read, "Wherever you go, we will follow."

Stopped too say my respects today Andrew, and was so overwhelmed by the love and care your family has for you and the memories they have provided all of us who stop and pay their respects at your place of rest. You and your family are an inspiration, and I think of you often. I have lost touch with your family, but still appreciate them very much, and the dedication and love they have for you their son. You're never forgotten. Your friend Dave.

August 20, 2018

My name is Charles J. Barr, Major General, U.S. Army, Retired. I was Commanding General of the 143rd Transportation Command in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait from July 2005 through June 2006. The 2-127th Infantry Battalion were a subordinate unit under my command. That Battalion, commanded by LTC Todd Taves, was responsible for providing convoy escort gun trucks for all of sustainment convoys moving into and traversing Iraq. I will never forget 26 September 2005 when I was informed of the Explosive Formed Penetrator IED that killed SPC Michael Wendling and SGT Andrew Wallace from the 2-127th Inf. Bn. It shocked the entire command to the reality of the dangers on the roads in Iraq. I think about those young men every day, along with the other 4 Soldiers and 2 Airmen killed on convoy operations in Iraq during my year in command of the 143rd. I had met two of these young men and knew them personally a few days before they were killed. I carry a set of dog tags in my pocket with their names on them. May they all rest in peace and never be forgotten by all those who knew and loved them. I, too, was a Citizen Soldier serving on active duty, leaving my Nebraska farm duties to my family at home. It was my second tour of duty as a mobilized Army Reserve Soldier.

Very respectfully, Charles J. Barr, Liberty, NE

To the family of Sgt. Andrew P. Wallace:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Andrew, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

You've always been and always will be my little brother- I miss you. You were a wonderful human being.

Rest in Peace.

August 16, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Its nice to see that people are still taking the time to write in the guest book regarding Andrew. I get up-dates from the guest book with any new enrty's, and it was nice to see someone wrote a note today. Thanks for keeping Andrews memories alive. I miss him everyday. His friend Dave

I was just thinking about you today... I know time goes on, and
things have to get back to normal... but it still seems unfair that you can't be here.
You were such a good person.

During the Holiday Season, as we give thanks for all that we have to be thankful for, I would like to again thank all the service men and women and their families for the sacrifices they make for all of us. Each and every member of the armed forces is a hero. They risk their lives daily to give us freedom. We can never repay them for the sacrifices that they make.

November 11, 2006

On this Veterans Day I would like to take the opportunity to thank Andrew and all the other service men and women for the sacrifices that they make to keep our country free. I also want to thank their families. God Bless you all!

Rest in Peace Andrew.

To the family and friends

As you are coming up to the one year mark, I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally. I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and felt I needed to extend to you my deepest condolences.

No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.

As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Andrew have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Life is a lot like a gentle wind, if we don't stop and allow it to intertwine itself in our hair; blow sweet breezes in our ear; to let it dry our sweat then we will inevitably miss such a wonderful and lovely chance to greet that wind as it passes by. It sounds to me that Mr. Wallace did not miss that chance wind, in fact, he embraced it and allowed it to greet him. It is for this, that you say, life is wonderful. Thank you Mr. Wallace for reminding us how wonderful and how precious life is. May you have lived in peace.

Today we attended the dedication ceremony at E. Cook. Mr. Wallace was our gym teacher at the YMCA for the last couple of years. We have lots of great memories of Mr. Wallace. Jase remembers Mr. Wallace teaching him how to use the treadmill. Jason remembers how Mr. Wallace always told him funny jokes, and taught him to play bocce ball. Jenny remembers Mr. Wallace teaching her how to lift weights at the YMCA.

When we found out that our friend, Mr. Wallace had been killed in Iraq, we were very sad. We think about Mr. Wallace especially on Wednesdays and Fridays when we go to the YMCA.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Wallace!!! We miss you and you make us 'proud to be an American.'

To the family of Sgt. Andrew P. Wallace:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

I had the honor of teaching with Andrew at North High School. He taught adaptive physical education to my students. He was an amazing teacher. He pushed them hard to grow and to succeed and yet, knew how to laugh and be human with them. Andrew was a true role model, a great person, and a good friend. I think of him so often, as do my students. What a loss to our world. Andrew, you are greatly missed.

I only met Michael briefly. We didn`t speak, there was too much happening. I helped carry him from the battlefield, I hope it is of some comfort to know that he wouldn`t have felt any pain. He was a brave man and a credit to your Country. Meeting was a great honour, and I think about him a lot. My prayers also go out to his family and loved ones.

I will remember Andrew as someone that gave 200% toward everything he was involved in. I met him through my best friend, David Hood. We went out with Andrew several times.
