Angelo Mazza Obituary

Angelo Mazza Sep 12, 1919 - Sep 8, 2011 Died peacefully in his sleep just a few days shy of his 92nd birthday. A native San Franciscan and youngest of seven children born to Antonino and Rose Mazza, who emigrated from Sicily to SF in 1908, Angelo had a long and fulfilling life. Pre-deceased by his wife, Dot, in 1998. Proud father of Nancy (Susan), Tom (Gladys), and Jim (Sandi) Mazza. Loving grandfather of Jason, Sean, David, and Melanie Mazza. Survived by his sister, Mary Cuneo, his brother-in-law, Msgr. Eugene Boyle, his sister-in-law, Betty Tackett, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Always industrious, honest and hard-working, after his graduation from Balboa HS, Angelo opened a grocery store on Monterey Blvd. He proudly served in the Navy during WW II aboard the USS Enterprise, a source of many remarkable tales. After the war, he started his family and settled in the West Portal neighborhood. Most of his career was spent in the savings & loan/real estate industry with Gibraltar Savings and then as president of Continental Savings. He loved all sports, and played golf, bocce ball, and handball. He was an avid fan (and armchair coach/GM) of the Giants, 49ers, Warriors, and the PGA. He was a 50+ year member of the Olympic Club. People were drawn to him by his Italian charm, humor, and open nature; he was always one to greet a stranger and make him or her feel like a friend. He will now join other members of his family in a better place (where all putts go in). He was known by many names: "Papa", "Grandpa", "The Godfather", and "Angelino", but we will always remember him as a warm soul, a kind and generous person, and a great guy. He will be missed. ARRIVEDERCI, ANGELO! His family would like to thank the amazing caregivers at Coming Home Hospice. Friends and family may visit after 7:00 pm on Monday, September 12 at St. Cecilia's Church, 2555 17th Ave, SF, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, September 13th at St. Cecilia's Church at 10:00am. Contributions to the charity of your choice.

Angelo was my true Italian Godfather! My Dad worked with Angelo on Monterey at Mazza Realty in the late 50's when I was born. He could not have picked a better Godfather for me. Angelo was like a second Santa Claus to me. Each year until I was a older teenager, I would wait for him at Christmas and he would always show up with a big box of cookies from and North Beach bakery and a gift. He always showed. Angelo was a true gentleman and I was lucky to have him in my life. Vince Sheehan (Novato, CA)

You gave my ex-wife her first full time job in your Savings and Loan in the Sunset District. I never knew you personally, but I thank you for your professional attitude, your kindness and your honesty, your genuine love for others and your sense of honor. May you rest in peace, and may your entire family know that you are safe and secure in your eternal home.
