Anne Hilgard Tittmann Widerstrom, 88, died September 25, 2023, in the care of loved ones. Born February 22, 1935 to Mary Young Ray and Edward McClanahan Tittmann in Salt Lake City, Utah, she attended Ojai Valley School and graduated from Rowland Hall School in SLC. She earned her BA in International Relations from Pomona College in 1957, spending her junior year in Geneva where she developed a lifelong love for France. She earned a MA from SAIS in Washington DC where she met her husband Franz Widerstrom (deceased). She received her Ph.D in Early Childhood Education from temple University, was Professor of Special education at University of Colorado at Boulder, prior to teaching at San Francisco State University, becoming a leading expert in the field of teaching children with special needs. She published widely, her work translated to other languages, including Chinese. Anne loved living in Suzon, Bouquet, France running her bed and breakfast, 'Mas Serein'. Fluent in French, she also taught at the University of Montpellier in southern France.
Anne is survived by her daughter, Anne Mary Silber, grand-daughter Rachael Silber, sisters Julie Rhind (Ridley Rhind) and Margot Beattie, nephews Thomas Berger, Nicholas and Mathew Rhind, niece Molly Tissavary, and dear friends Maureen Morgan, Francesca Bero and Paige Fields.
Anne made deep and lasting friends easily due to her seemingly innate welcoming interest in others. She was a wonderful teacher who brought insightful, empathic understanding into the hearts and minds of her many students. A celebration of Anne's life will be held on December 16, 2023.
