Annika Kelly Olson Strain Passed away peacefully on September 6th, 2006 after her long and courageous battle with cancer. Born Nov. 14, 2002, in San Francisco, she lived all her life in The City by the Bay, though she also loved the time she spent at Lake Tahoe. Annika enjoyed going to Little Gators preschool, playing at the park and visiting the zoo. During the last 17 months, Annika battled her cancer with tremendous strength and hope. Annika leaves behind her parents Anna and Mike Strain, as well as her little sister Katrina. She is also survived by her grandparents David and Dolores Olson of Walnut Creek, CA, and John and Francine Strain of San Rafael, CA; aunts and uncles, John and Lisa Strain of Greenbrae, CA; Erin Strain of SF, CA; Kristin and Darrell Bridgeford of San Luis Obispo, CA, and Erik and Debbie Olson of Walnut Creek, CA. She is also survived by her many loving cousins, JohnAugust, Karaline and AnnaSara Bridgeford; David and Spencer Olson and Sabrina and Ryan Strain; as well as her great-grandparents William and Betty Davis of Sequim, WA. Annika also had many friends and a few special buddies. The Rosary will be held at 7:15 pm, Wed, Sept. 13th at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco, with the Funeral mass being celebrated at St. Ignatius on Thursday, September 14th at 2:00 pm. We would like to thank and acknowledge the wonderful and caring staff of doctors, nurses and child life specialists of UCSF Children's Hospital who cared for Annika during these many months. She truly enjoyed her time at the hospital and clinic much more than anyone really should. Annika's picture jumped out at me yesterday, I've been broken hearted ever since. I am a mother of a 6 year old, born the same place as Annika, with the same pink card on her warmer, the same weight at birth. I cannot begin to imagine your devastation or unbearable loss. I just know I had to tell you how very sorry I am. A picture is worth a thousand words. Your pictures show the strength, love and support that is your family. Annika truly is the angel she looks like. May god comfort you and give you all strength.

September 13, 2006

I do not know you, but after reading the poignant story of your daughter Annika's life, I wanted to send my condolences to you. My neighbors lost their young daughter, barely a year old, over a year ago, and I felt it a privilege to feel the strength they exuded throughout her and their ordeal. I know it was tearing them apart on the inside. May you know there are many who send good thoughts your way in this impossible time. On another note, at a class yesterday I met a friend of Annika's grandmother or aunt, and by pure coincidence Annika's life came into our conversation...such a small world.

Lisa Weimer

September 13, 2006

Dear Strain Family,

We came across your daughter's obituary when looking at the death notice of an older relative. Her story has touched us deeply. We are active with Relay for Life and plan to make a donation in Annika's name. Although we can't afford much we hope we can do our small part to see that someday soon no child will have to go through such an ordeal. We are so sorry for you loss.

September 13, 2006

Dear Mike & Anna, you don't know me but I've known about Annika through your neighbor, Jeanine Ackerly, who told me what a beautiful child she was and how brave she was through her illness. My heart goes out to you and your family. My niece passed away several years ago; my sister and I know your pain. Cherish the memories as they will sustain you through this very difficult time and bring smiles to your faces in the near future.
