Anthony Monroe Obituary

Anthony Allyn Monroe
05/22/1941 - 11/02/2023
Anthony "Tony" Monroe passed away on November 2, 2023 in Belmont, California from complications of a stroke. Tony was born in Los Angeles, California on May 22, 1941. He grew up in Medford, Oregon and graduated from Medford High School in 1959. After that, Tony attended Stanford University, receiving a degree in Economics in 1963.
Tony was most proud of that part of his life that he spent serving our country in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 to 1967. He first served as an advisor in Vietnam, later to return to Vietnam and did a tour of duty as a First Lieutenant infantry platoon leader. He resigned in 1967, having earned the rank of Captain. Many of the friendships Tony made in the USMC endured throughout his life; and during his retirement, he enjoyed talking with and seeing many of those friends.
After Vietnam, Tony attended Stanford again, receiving his Masters in Business Administration in 1970. He later went on to work for Singer-Friden and subsequently spun off a company dealing with computer parts.
Tony married Rosemary, "Bunny," Boyer in 1970. Throughout their 53-year marriage, Tony and Bunny enjoyed traveling widely throughout Europe and parts of Africa. Of special interest when traveling was visiting archaeological sites, eating good food, and observing life go by in small cafes.
Tony was especially fond of animals and together with Bunny raised three great Pyrenees, a myriad of Maine Coon cats and ferals and -- much to his wife's consternation -- two pot belly pigs. In addition to golf, Tony was an avid follower of politics and loved nothing better than a rousing discussion of such, especially when he could provoke his more liberal friends.
Tony was a wonderful husband and a good friend to many. He was curious, humorous, generous, fun, loving, opinionated, and kind. He is greatly missed.
Tony was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and Allyn; brother, Michael; and cousin, Peter Rasmussen. He is survived by his wife, Bunny; sister, Pamela Murphy; brothers, Patrick and Jeffery; his favorite Maine Coon cat, Marcel; in addition to his close cousins, Robert Maentz and Christopher, Nicholas and Terrance Rasmussen; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be private. Donations may be made to DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Charitable Service Trust.
