Art Hillman Obituary

Art Hillman

Oct. 6, 1931 - Oct. 26, 2017

Family Man Arthur Lew Hillman, Jr., of Orinda, California, passed away Thursday, October 27, following a courageous fight with dementia. He is survived by his sons Bill (Abby), John, and Tom (Elena); grandchildren Piper, Logan, Matthew, Jack, Grant, Nico, Daniel, and Tommy, brother Ron (Iris); numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends. His family and friends were the focus of his life.
Art was born on October 6, 1931, in San Francisco, and lived with his family in the Central Richmond District near Golden Gate Park. His graduated from Washington High School in 1949, where he served as Senior Class President, earned the Cummings Cup, and played soccer, baseball, and basketball, for which he earned all-city honors.
The first in his family to attend college, Art entered the University of California, Berkeley, where he made many lifelong friends. He was a member of the varsity boxing team and the Sigma Chi Fraternity, where he served as chapter president. He graduated in 1953 with a degree in Criminology. He also met his wife of 61 years Jane Bartlett Hillman at Cal, and they married July 24, 1954.
Art served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant and counter intelligence officer in several locations before returning to Berkeley to attend Boalt Hall law school, where he served on the Board of Editors of the California Law Review. During the early years of his distinguished legal career, he worked for Dunne, Dunne & Phelps in San Francisco and Martin, Martin & Hillman in Berkeley. He spent the lion's share of his career as in-house counsel for P.G. & E., and later worked for Quadros & Johnson in San Mateo. Upon his retirement from active legal practice, Art taught popular introductory legal courses to graduate students within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cal for 10 years, which gave him great satisfaction.
Art and Jane settled in Orinda in 1962, where they raised their sons, and spent the rest of their lives. A very active volunteer in his community, Art served as President of the San Francisco Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1965, coached numerous youth sports teams, was active with the Meadow Pool Swim and Tennis Club and Glorietta Elementary School Parents Association, and served as Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 233. Art practiced judo for many years and loved playing on the Incredibles softball team. Upon his retirement, he was an active volunteer with the Salvation Army. He loved to travel with Jane to historic and religious locations worldwide.
Art fought the good fight with good cheer, and leaves a legacy of good works. Services will be held at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 6013 Lawton Ave., Oakland, at 11 am on Saturday, November 4, 2017.

Majors Bill & Judy Nottle join the rest of The Salvation Army Concord Corps, in sending our heartfelt condolences to the Hillman family. Art served on The Salvation Army Advisory Board for several years while the Nottles were here and they have only wonderful things to say about Art and his faithful service to this community.

Be assured of our prayers during this time of loss. Art's memory will love on through the wonderful groundwork he laid, particularly as it pertains to the Emergency Disaster Services based out of Concord Salvation Army.

So sorry to hear of Art's passing. I met him when he served on the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army in Concord. He always had genuine concern for others especially the disadvantaged in our community. He never stinted in offering his time or expertise for any project which would bring relief and some pleasure to others. His sly smile and understated humor will be greatly missed.

I went to Washington High and played a lot of
basketball at the 27th avenue playground with
Art. He was a great young man and I always had
the greatest respect for him and his family.
