August (Gus/Bud) Zipse passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on December 20, 2013.
A native of San Francisco, Bud was born on August 3, 1921, the son of Jean and August G. Zipse. Bud's education was grounded in Catholic tradition at St. Anthony's School, St. Peter's HS and St. Mary's College in Moraga. Following graduation from SMC in 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Lieutenant (jg) aboard the destroyer escorts USS Inch and Baker in the North Atlantic during WW II.
Returning to SF, Bud married Marguerite Mitchell in 1948. Together they lovingly raised four children at their home in the Sunset district. Bud's dedication to his wife and extended family guided his life and he often was engaged in multiple jobs (Comptroller at St. Mary's, management roles at Continental Insurance, private practice accountant) to support the growing brood. Through most of the last 60 years of his life, Bud was a devoted member of St. Gabriel Parish; he lived his faith and served the church in every way possible short of being ordained a priest. He will be remembered as a caring, faith-filled family man who encouraged his children in their pursuits and warmly embraced his ever expanding circle of relationships.
Bud is survived by his wife, Margaret; sister Elizabeth Bartolotti; children Ron (Sharie Stone), Tom (Sheri), Mark (Mary) and Michele (John Cercos); grandchildren Alicia, Emily, Matt, Scott, Brett, Kate, Danny & Mary Rose; and many nieces and nephews.
With heartfelt gratitude, Bud's family would like to thank Tess and his caregivers at Damenik's House.
A celebration of Bud's life will be held at St. Gabriel Catholic Church (2559 40th Ave, SF) at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 30th, followed by the Committal at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Old Mission Road, Colma. A Rosary/Vigil will be held at Duggan's Serra Mortuary (500 Westlake Ave, Daly City, CA) at 5 PM on Sunday, December 29. Memorial gifts in August's name may be made to St. Gabriel Parish School (SF), to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory School (SF) or to St. Mary's College (Moraga).

Dear Marge,
I've just heard from Mom of Bud's passing . . . .I would imagine that Dad was right there with the rest of Bud's family to welcome him to his heavenly home. . . now my Dad and my Godfather are enjoying each other's friendship, stories and laughter, once again.

With love to you and the family,
