B. Hutchinson Obituary

B. Clyde Hutchinson, III
November 14, 1941 - April 12, 2022
Amateur philatelist; professional train enthusiast; avid traveler; respected attorney; generous mentor; beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather, Benjamin Clyde Hutchinson III suffered cardiac arrest following a viral infection April 12 in Oakland.
Clyde was born on the family farm in Yuma, CO, the eldest of Benjamin Clyde II and Margaret Hutchinson's three children. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1962 and went on to UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall, earning his JD in 1965 and passing the California State Bar exam in 1966.
He practiced maritime and transportation litigation for more than 50 years at Dunne, Phelps & Mills, San Francisco; Crosby Heafey Roach & May, Oakland; and Lombardi, Loper & Conant, Oakland. Recognized as a Super Lawyer from 2004 to 2016, Clyde was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel.
Clyde was admired and envied by his partners for his generosity, kindness, and gentleness amid the everyday frustrations of litigation. His commitment to the practice of law extended to a zeal for helping young attorneys grow into their careers as forceful, informed advocates for their clients.
Always the heart and soul of family dinners, holidays and vacations together, if Dad or Grandpa was with you, there was a guarantee of fun, laughter, and joy. Clyde was a history buff and family vacations often included historical sites. Every stop along the way was a teachable moment.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan; his two children, Mark (Kathleen) and Laura; his grandchildren, Austin (Donna), Erin, and Kelly; and his brother Gordon.
There will be a private service and interment at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland.
Please remember Clyde with a donation to the charity of your choice.

I knew Clyde as an accomplished trial attorney when that was what I wanted to be. He was a wonderful man, always generous with his time and encouraging with his words. I have always held him in the highest regard. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I knew Clyde from my earliest days as a lawyer when I worked in-house for the Southern Pacific. Clyde was one of my favorite "outside counsel"--and he quickly became a friend. I spent many lovely hours with Clyde and Joan at railroad trial counsel meeting events. I have wonderful memories of Clyde as do hundreds of others who came to know him, I'm sure.
