Barbara Miller Obituary

Barbara Rose Miller Died on September 26, 2011 at the age of 92. Her wisdom and strength served her well throughout her life. She was born to Jack and Rosalie Rose on May 7, 1919, and grew up in San Francisco, attending Lafayette grammar school, Presidio Junior High, Lowell High, and U.C. Berkeley. In 1939 she married Alfred Miller, who would become a prominent San Francisco attorney and who predeceased her, and they raised two children, Lynn Miller Nightingale and Baron Miller. Her life was expansive and full, and positively touched the lives of virtually everyone with whom she interacted. Her interests were abundant and diverse, and her main focus was always her family. In addition to her children, she leaves behind adoring and adored son-in-law Richard Nightingale, daughter-in-law Nancy Keyes, grandchildren Zachary Nightingale, Rishelle Nightingale Maman, and Izra Miller, grandsons-in-law Walter Rey and Eric Maman, great-grandchildren Jacob Maman, Ari Maman, and Benjamin Maman, and many other relatives and friends. She was a lifelong member of Congregation Emanu-el and a memorial service will be held in its sanctuary - Arguello and Lake Streets, San Francisco - on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. For anyone wishing to do so, the family suggests a donation to the Altar Floral Fund at Congregation Emanu-el or Shriners' Hospital in her memory.

Barbara was a kind, charming, and generous woman who passed on these characteristics to her children. She had fabulous taste in art and architecture, providing a lovely environment for all who visited. Her choice at the end of her life to exit on her own terms is testimony to her spunky character. We can all learn so much from her. Sincerely, Mark and Jan Shapiro
