Barbara O'Brien Obituary

Barbara Claire O'Brien
(nee O'Leary)
03/05/1927 - 09/20/2025
Barbara passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love, at the age of 98. A proud third-generation San Franciscan, she was born and raised in the Mission District, the second of four spirited siblings. Her early years were deeply rooted in family, faith, and community, values that would shape her beautiful, full life.
Barbara attended St. John's grammar and high schools, where she embraced her Ursuline education and formed lifelong friendships. Her connection to St. John's remained strong throughout the years, she was a dedicated "Ursuline Girl", a testament to her deep sense of loyalty and gratitude.
She met her beloved husband, Tom O'Brien, at a bus stop on the way to a Sacred Heart dance. A chance meeting, that blossomed into a love story lasting over 70 years. They shared a lifelong love of dancing, happily gliding across the floor with joy and ease. Together, they raised 11 children in the Haight and Sunset districts, creating a warm, lively home filled with love, laughter, and deep family ties. Barbara and Tom were devoted parishioners at Holy Name of Jesus Church for 68 years.
She had an adventurous spirit. She was always up for fun, whether it was parasailing in Mexico, flying in a glider, waterslides with the grandchildren or traveling with Tom and dear friends. Her quick wit, and playful nature made her a joy to be around.
Style and grace were her trademarks. She had an impeccable sense of fashion, always perfectly put together with her hair curled, nails polished, high heels and her outfits thoughtfully chosen. She was a generous and intentional gift-giver. Her handwritten cards, often decorated with stickers, were little treasures.
Above all, she was a devoted matriarch whose greatest joy was her family. She was the proud grandmother of 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense pride and happiness. Her legacy lives on in the hearts and lives of the many she helped shape with her wisdom and unconditional love.
Barbara's strength and deep love and care for her family across generations is a lesson for us all. She leaves behind a beautiful and lasting reminder of a life well lived and a heart deeply cherished.
She is survived by her children Colleen (Steve), Dennis, Carol (Ray), Jeanne, Lisa (Slobodan), Kevin (Janine), Laurie, and John (Peggy). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom, daughter Lynn (son-in-law Michael), and sons Tom and Tim. She was a loving grandmother and great grandmother of 49. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass celebrating Barbara's life will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 39th and Lawton Street, San Francisco.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's memory may be made to Holy Name School or St. John Catholic School.
